We have a XPS M1210 here with the communication package, and we're having a lot of trouble with noise (static) feedback from the onboard mike... It doesn't seem to be much better using an external one either. Tech support hasn't been able to help either.

Just curious if this is systemic or do we have a problem with this box? BTW the sound quality from the XPS is far inferior to myInspiron 600M with onboard mike, which I find strange.

Come on guys can I get the down and nasty on this box (I'm looking to buy one... should I?)... Anyone here from the Nashville XPS support group? BTW my buddy's M1210 service tag number (Canadian) is not recognized, so he gets routed through India, then back to NAS eventually... They keep saying they will fix this, but its hasn't happened yet... Is there a fast track way of getting this fixed?

I had to get my service tag fixed on my XPS 600. The wrong tag was in the system. You need to call Customer Service. I was dubious it would get fixed quickly and easily but it did. It's one of the few things that Dell hasn't mucked up horribly for me. Customer Service contacts the tag team by IM and usually it is fixed while you are on the phone with Customer Service...as I said, one of the few things in regards to Dell that hasn't been a major hassle.

Tech support runs virtually 100% on scripts, which are like search engines. If your complaint doesn't match the script word-for-word, the person on the phone sees "not found" (and usually tells you "it's software").

Try different phone agents--one out of a thousand actually knows something. Try different descriptors, like "microphone distorted". It's most likely a hardware defect. The microphone is permanently attached to the motherboard, so that's what it takes to fix it. Plug in an external mic. If it works right then, that proves it's the onboard microphone. If not, it's the audio codec, which is also permanently attached to the motherboard.
