I took a job with Dell. SMB/client tech support. I start Monday. I'm in a difficult situation financially and Dell pays better than my current job. I found this website after I accepted the job offer and now I am scared! The rational side of me says this is only a small percentage of people who work at Dell. But it is still scary! Oh well, I've spent 2 years in Iraq..how bad can this be?

Dells such a good company they fired everyone in Roseburg after making them come to work in their PJS.

It really is the pits, I have never in all of my adult life been treated as badly as I was at Dell then anywhere I have ever worked.

Watch your back, don't trust your manager, when the Tell Dell survey comes out, say all is well, and start looking for another job now.

I'm going to say this to you straight.
"Your better off working in Iraq with the millitary than at Dhell. At least you know who your working for and you at least have a chance to shoot back!

Dhell will use you and toss your drained withered body along the side of the road just like it did to many of us now posting here.

Do not "Ever" Trust Dhell for any reason! The managment is worse than you can imagine.

You've got to figure, for every 1000 employees Dell screws over, one will find this site and tell about it. So what's recorded here is the tip of the iceberg.

Take their money while you can. Exercise whatever political skill you have to stay there until you find another job. Don't stop looking. Don't invest any emotional capital into Dell, your investment will be betrayed.

I hope for your sake that you don't have a family. DHell talks a good game about work-life effectiveness, "Winning with Integrity", and "You're the Reason", but in all actuality, they couldn't care less about any of that. Just wait until you get your head full of "the needs of the business" and "dealing with ambiguity," among other catch-phrases.

After a few years, if you last that long, you will feel every morning as you walk into the building that you have entered a war zone, and that any day may be your last. Your every move is tracked on camera, your calls recorded, your keystrokes are recorded, your piss time is recorded, and those you thought were your friends will stab you in the back. Run, run fast and don't look back. Don't trust anyone, and remember, you are not paranoid if they really are out to get you.

Whatever you do, do NOT bring any personal items to your cubicle; that means: no iPods, no PDAs, no personal photos, etc. Because when Dhell makes up an excuse to can you and walk you out the door, you'll be forced to leave everything behind and you'll never see them again.

Astro, you've stepped into the realm of the most devious, unethical employer of the 00s, and that's saying something. Dell has been sued by state governments for a plethora of employment and trade violations, and always lost. It's not just a matter of the opinions of a couple hundred people on this site, it's a matter of court record.

Thanks for your service.

Working for Dell is a neverending series of IEDs. It's just like Iraq, only it's air conditioned. You survived Iraq, you might survive Dell. But you'd rather be somewhere else the whole time.

I already said the most encouraging thing I could say in good conscience: Take their money, keep your head down, seek another assignment.

It's just like any job, even the worst ones. If you desperately need it, just shut up, do as you're ordered, don't give opinions on anything, even during lunch/breaks, blend in with the background, and save your pennies for the inevitable canning.

The opinion part is important; lots of supervisors go on fishing expeditions, seeing if you agree or disagree with their opinions. If you need to survive, just suck it up, and agree with everything they say until you get the skills for a better job...then leave with no notice. Don't let office politics speed your departure.

There are worse white-collar jobs out there, but it's pretty rare. (CSR tech support for the cable company is about the same).

Hi Friend,

I am a former worker in Consumer Sales, which is different than what you are going into, but I can safely relate my experience to you. (A) Listen to what every posting on this site, and (B) be prepared to feel like you have been beaten every night when you get home. I discovered that working for Dhell is like no experience I have ever felt before (and this comes from a person who used to drive a school bus and work CONSTRUCTION).

I left Dhell for a job who is more aligned with my skills and even though I work 9 hour days with a 1 hour commute each way, I actually feel more energized than I did with Dhell's 8 hour day with a 15 minute commute.

No matter what happens, I wish you well and please feel free to post updates here!

Now THAT'S encouraging.

Go ahead, show up, get paid. First thing you'll discover, they give you a speech about how customer service is everything. Next thing, you discover the extent to which policy and procedure prevent customer service. Dell even has a phrase for it, "dealing with ambiguity".

Let us know the first time you hear that. Oh, and try not to snicker, knowing what they mean by it.

"Dealing with ambiguity" is their catch-all phrase for anything that goes wrong, even when their computer applications don't work. You see, they'd rather make excuses and even turn it into a competency, which one has to show continuous improvement in proficiency at, than to actually fix what's wrong. That ought to give you a pretty good idea of the type of organisation you'll soon be working for, let alone all the other bullshit someone has to put up with there.

BTW, expect to be sexually harassed or asked to do something that conflicts with your values or moral judgements.
