I've only just joined but I notice that there's been loads of requests to get around the dreaded white screen which essentially stops you from doing anything...no bios - nothing. It goes without saying that some machines might be stolen in which case the password protection is doing its job. But there maybe other reasons...I fall into that category with a D620 which is locked for reasons that I won't bore you with. It could possibly be sorted by contacting Dell, but its a relatively old (2nd-3rd user) machine and I doubt that I could take that route. I know that earlier machines could be dealt with fairly easily...paperclips/pw generators etc. I don't think that the D620 can be fixed in this way. I see that several posters on Ebay are offering their services and, judging by their feedback, it looks as if they are doing the business. But it aint cheap. Now they must be using software of some kind to generate these keys. I can't find it anywhere but it must exist. Ideas anyone. Looking for freebies...no commercial stuff please. Worth a try eh? |

Alright, go onto support.dell.com
Fill out the ownership transfer form. Fill in all information that you have, leave everything else blank.
Be sure to put in the service tag AND express service code.
Once the tranfer is complete call dell.
Latitudes have lifetime support. They'll get you the code once the system is in your name. |

Thanks for the reply...I'll certainly try that. So said, I gather that Dell aren't always so helpful...hence my question. I still reckon that there's a software hack out there that will do the job...else the Ebay guys wouldn't be in business. Guess they're keeping it to themselves...I'll find it if I have to. |

| In all my time I've come across onl y one guy who figured out the algorythm. The ebay sellers, would be mostly dell techs who have access to the master password recovery tool on Dell's network and are capitolizing on it. |

If I really cared enough I could work on it.
The key used to generate the code is #SERVICETAG-595B the code is the same length as the service tag, and in lower case.
If I was working with a university that ordered 50 of the same system, all tags are in numerical order, I'd be able to figure it out extremely fast.
Can it be done, hell yeah, and it would be quite profitable. |

Agreed...Its possible if you have the time and patience to work at it. I'll try the Dell route first - failing that one of the Ebay merchants is going to be a little better off on my account. |

Good luck with that. I've never seen a large order with sequential service tags. For whatever reason there are always gaps in the service tag numbers.
