Hi thought I'd let you know how the wife's new laptop is running! I had posted previously saying I would let you all know.
Laptop runs very well after close to 4 months, virtually no problems except for a no sound trouble after updating to the last kernel which was fixed in 5 minutes by inputting 6 lines of code.
I have to admit, I am pretty impressed by this machine! Yes it is a Dell but thank god it is not assembled by them! It is a Quanta with an Intel designed board (yay!) which is basically a shell that is then sent to Malaysia where they finish the build by installing the cpu, wi-fi, HD, and other parts. I have it from a good source that QC in Malaysia is taken care of by Quanta, who apparently cares enough about their stuff to make sure it gets put together right (They have a reputation to maintain).
So basically so far This computer has run without a hitch. I'll give updates on this system in this thread, the good bad and ugly lol.
This system has a Sony DVD RW, Western Digital SATA 7200 rpm notebook drive, Kingston memory, Sony Battery, Intel designed motherboard, and a Quanta Case design (Compaq Presarios and some business HPs share the same design)
Overall I give it a 9 for performance, 9 reliability, 7 price, and 10 stability(it really is stable).
This was not a base system, and compared to a base, it does much better!
Base systems come with 5400 rpm Seagate or Samsung drives (relying on two that friends have with Vista based Inspiron 1525n) Hynix RAM, NEC/Hitachi DVD-RWs, and a few other differences.
Comments: If you want a good DHell laptop that will be reliable (open source), go the open source route, and upgrade the RAM (2 gig), drive (120 gig 7200 one with free fall sensor) and the 9 cell battery. This configuration so far is standing up to regular use.
I find it a little expensive, but at least it has quality components in it. I am not pro DHell, I got turned off completely by the problems I have had lately with my 2 desktops and my laptop (1150) which are needing major TLC to stay running.
As Rocke_T_Sinetist put it so well the old Dells were and still are the best. (please note I use Dell respectfully when speaking about the older ones lol)
It seems that Open source and portability is the way to go to get a good all around laptop from DHell.
Next update will be after New Years. Well see if the wife is still in the I love it to death stage lol.
Cheers! |

| Well, I guess it was too good to be true. Yesterday the laptop started having brightness issues. The Brightness on the LCD panel would readjust itself automatically. Rebooted the laptop, didn't help, cold booted it, that too didn't help. Finally shut it down, unplugged it, and that did the trick. Now let's see if it keeps up! |

Sounds like the ambient light sensor may have been turned on.

Scroll all the way down, and it gives details.
Try hitting Fn-Left arrow and seeing if that makes it any better. |

Thanks for the input diashto, very much appreciated. Finally it was a loose power cord on the power adapter that caused the problem as now it's working fine with no more freakiness lol.
So next report in the New Year.
Cheers!

Time to give another heads up on this 1525n
It just doesn't quit! Other then two minor bugs when ubuntu was updated (sound screwing up), this thing has not had any issues.
I really am surprised actually. I know that there are tons of Dhells out there that are freaking, and I would have just loved to call Dhell for this one, BUT seems I am just plain unlucky ... Maybe the fact that the other half is not at all hard on it, turns it off when not in use, and overall doesn't beat the machine may explain why it is still running strong! Or maybe the final build was done by a conscientious person (do they still exist at Dhell?).
Well hope to give you bad news soon, but so far I just can't!
Cheers!

Yes, drawmada. There are a few conscientious people still left at DHell, but they are few and far between and their numbers are shrinking daily. I am glad your system is still working, but let's not jinx this miracle by celebrating prematurely. _________________ Q: How do you know Dell Management is lying to you?
