The Tennessean - July 8, 2008
Dell Inc. is cutting the evening shift at its distribution center near the Nashville Airport to increase efficiencies, according to a company spokesman.
Dell spokesman Ken Bissell said no employees would be laid off and employees would be moved to other positions. He couldn't comment on whether there would be any layoffs among Dell contractors.
"This is something that's not terribly uncommon in manufacturing," he said. "It's based on schedules and the needs of the business."
He couldn't say when was the last time Dell had cut back on hours of operation in Nashville. Bissell said the shift change was not related to the company's announcement more than a year ago that Dell would reduce the size of its work force by 10 percent corporate-wide.
In late May, Dell said revenues for the first quarter climbed 9 percent to $16 billion on strong sales, including Brazil, Russia and India.
For the first time, revenues outside the U.S. exceeded domestic revenues. Profits rose 12 percent to 38 cents per share on increased revenues and cost-cutting measures.
The company has seen its stock rise from a low of about $18 per share to its close on Monday at $22.97 per share in Nasdaq trading.
