Dell does have some (many) model-specific issues which they never cop to publicly, but resolve under-the-table as in your case, kimber. Not knowing the platform or its issues, I can't say with certainty.

But something is peculiar about your model and experience. Almost everyone calling Dell about a past-warranty issue gets the stiffarm, period.

Without knowing otherwise, I'd say they're trying to forestall a class-action lawsuit for defective design. There is a common-law standard of merchantability which is applicable in all jurisdictions, and they know that. I suspect their legal department told them to solve those problems on a case-by-case basis, to avoid a much bigger one.
