I don't know. I could be wrong but I don't ever remember seeing it this slow. Although my territory is WAYYY smaller now than it used to be. I pretty mauch begged/forced them to make it the city only. It was no longer worth it nor could my kidneys/car handle anymore 200 mile per day stuff.

I only take calls within a 30 or so mile radius of my house so I guess I'll suffer more with a smaller turf. But I could never go back to such a big area. It's just to much.

But hey, I just got an email confirming that I still have a job so I guess we just have to hang in there. I'm glad this is only part time for me because I remember all to well what it was like trying to make a full time living off of QXS as a QSP.

Qualxserv's contract with Dell went from 2500 calls per per to over 4000 calls per week back in the summer of last year.. that's why they hired so many new techs (and why we got swamped in july/august before they could hire enough)... and had to subsequently reduce the territory of all the techs out there - to make room for the new techs.

At least that was the story I got from one of the conference calls recently.

Hey all, it obvious that qualx only values qualx, and doesn't give 2 cents for their "employees." Look at the certifications--it's quax this, customer that...--where is the incentive to excel? You run, they play and get paid. Use them like they're using you. Get certified, get experience, then move on. Get out before you get so disgusted you get axed. Enough said!

I love the fact that they expect you to work from 8am to 9pm and weekends but it is still a PT job. There has got to be somekind of labor issue with that.
There is no possible way to even consider another PT job to fill in with bills when call volume is low, when they expect you to drop everything, go drive 20miles to service one call at 4 in the afternoon.
The only way I see around this is if the techs unite and either get a union to come in, or everyone walk off one day to show qualxserv that we are important. At least with a union we could count on a raise every year, and some kind of benefits and representation.
We get no bonus', no incentives, they even stopped giving us a ham for christmas!

I have been with QXS quite a while too. When you HAVE to work is btw you and the customer. I do know one thing....as for working on the weekend...simply tell the customer that you are unable to order parts on the weekend and that they will have to wait until Monday. And that is the truth. I know from personal experience. Both numbers we have for the DSPQ will not work on weekends! Neither Dell or QXS can fault you there. As for nites, I simply tell the customer I do not work past 17:00 and try and work something out with them. When it gets dark at 16:30 CST I will be damned if I am gonna try and find an address in the dark! As for the union idea...forget that. There are too many "right to work" states for it to have any effect. I know...this all sucks
but the sooner you learn how to "schmooze" the customer the better. As long as they get service within a reasonable amount of time you are doing it right!

There are also far too many "employment at will" ("fire at will") states for my taste, mine being one of them. At least with a union, your employer can't fire you with no reason at all (they have to have a legit reason to term a union employee). Also union employees on average earn far more than their non-union counterparts, typically aren't forced to work 60 hours a week (and if they do, they get overtime for it), have a better WLE (work-life effectiveness), get retirement benefits (and not some blasted 401k that can go down the toilet if stock prices fall) and medical benefits, and in many cases don't have to work weekends. After being employed with DHell, I vowed not to have another non-union job and am now in an industry affiliated with the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

As a BancTec technician, I went one step further and required the customer to be available for a two hour time window BEFORE 5pm (ie they needed to be at the location at 3pm, and I would be finished by 5pm). This infuriated the "Im not home until after 5pm or weekends" crowd, but I was not going to START WORKING at 5pm, especially not for the pitiful sum of $23 a call. Per Dell's contract with BancTec, I was permitted a 2-hour time window, and I worked between 8am and 5pm (meaning my first call of the day had a 2-hour time window of between 8am and 10am). Nobody in management ever gave me a problem about this, and if the customer was angry and vowed to escalate the issue, I never heard a peep from my management about it. They knew the rules just as well as I did.

I was hired by Qualxserv this past summer, but I was pigeon-holed into the IBM department doing stink-pads and 4-hour-notice desktop repairs for the same price as Dell NBD work (Dell calls would've taken me half the time these IBM POS's took, and that's not "point-of-sale"). I was promised Dell work, but then they dumped Dell workstation and server calls on me, not the easier and faster residential dimension and inspiron work.

After 7 weeks of IBM crap I said forget it. You guys need to integrate your IBM, Dell, Sony and heaven-knows-what-else departments so you at least know each other at DHL and know you work for the same company LOL. The guy at DHL that picked up sony work for QS didn't even know the IBM or Dell QS guys worked for the same company, even though they met each other every week at the same location.

Did you read the above, where everyone had something bad to say about Qualxserv and Bantec? You see, they are not 'employers', they are contractors and you are a subcontractor under them.

They pay by the call--no calls, no pay. You use your own car, pay all the gas, insurance, depreciation, wear & tear. You are supposed to be available 12 hours a day, so it's not likely you can get another scheduled job to make up losses.

There is no future with either company--you can't 'work your way up to manager'. The companies are hollow, they have zero assets. For the cost of renting a 400 sq ft office and getting a phone, fax, internet connection, they skim off your work to the tune of roughly 50%.

On the larger scale, the US economy right now is sagging badly. Some say it's failing, and to many, it is. Most skills besides car and airconditioner repair, have been offshored. The economy where you are is stronger. Now, if you had a Master's in software and were under 28 years old, you might find a place here. But there are 5 million people here with Bachelor's degrees and 10-15 years experience who cannot get a job AT ALL. If I were you, I'd stay where you are. If I weren't 62, too old for adventure, I'd move to India.

I have little knowledge of the IT industry--running business networks--but you sound qualified for that on some level. You can research openings on corporate and job websites.
