| I'm having huge problems with my xps M1330 and was told there is a problem with the nvidia graphics cards, specifically the 8400GS and 8600GT, that they are not as resistant to high temperatures as they thought and are causing motherboards to overheat and break down. Anyone else heard this? |

This is kind of an engineering lecture, rather than a solution. We know that performance video cards generate huge amounts of heat. We also know that Dell laptops overheat chronically, even with standard video.
Dell--or rather, their Chinese contractors--is/are simply not competent to design a performance laptop that will work for any length of time without assiduous maintenance. Air passages must be kept scrupulously clean. To the extent, if you own a longhair cat, you have to take the system apart monthly and clean it out. Ordinary dust and lint must be removed no less than every 6 months. Of course, Dell doesn't tell you that, but that's like selling a car and not telling you you have to change the oil. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

nVidia has admitted to the problem with those two cards in particular. Its been all over the internet for several weeks now. I think it was BetaNews that broke the story. HP is replacing the cards without the user having to live in hell for months first (or until they are out of warranty). I know a number of folks with this problem who have HP's. They call HP support and a replacement card is immediately issued as this is an admitted problem by nVidia. HP doesn't hassle them. HP doesn't tell them they have a software problem, etc. HP simply says yes, known problem, you need a replacement card.
What is Dell doing about this? Dell has issued a bios upgrade that is supposed to fix the problem. The bios upgrade simply forces the fan to run at full speed at all times. Dell users over at Dell forum and in other forums are saying flashing the bios to force the fan to run full speed is like putting a bandaid on a gaping, deep knife wound. It doesn't fix the problem and they are angry. Besides, they report a constant roar with the fan running at high speed all the time.In this instance, it is particularly incredible that Dell would not just replace the card since nVidia has already fessed up to the problem. Plus, what does it cost Dell? It is an nVidia screwup so it costs Dell nothing to fix this except the labor to put in the card since these are laptops and not easy to put in the card yourself. The fan is gonna blow running at full speed all the time...it is just mind boggling. |

And this is technically better than nothing. For all we know (and i've yet to see a Dell press release that could confirm or deny this, so its just wild speculation) Dell could fully intend on replacing the motherboard/vid cards.. it just needs to actually manufacture the boards, or get its chinese contractor to do so, as it were. It wouldn't make any sense to replace a part with the same part that has the same problem, would it?
Out of curiosity, how long do those HP owners have to wait for their cards to come? |

| I've had a motherboard replacement which lasted all of two mins. For some reason they won't replace the graphics card or accept lap top is faulty. They've said they'll just keep replacing the motherboard until the warranty is out. |
