Okay, my computer came up with this error last week:

Msg: Block 999295: Uncorrectable data error or Media is write-protected.

This occurred for blocks 6592668 onwards as well.

What does this mean? How does this kind of error happen? What do I do now?

Note: The computer is a 2003 model. The most I've done to the computer recently (I'm a college student, so I'm only home a month out of every 8 months) is install an NVIDIA driver and an online game, Mabinogi.

2003 may or may not have this feature. F12 and boot to HDD diagnostic. If it returns any error at all, the drive is failing.

That's what it sounds like, the test would just confirm it.

Tried it, and it posted at least 4 different errors. What causes this kind of problem?

The drive is coming apart internally. Data may or may not be recoverable. It can't be 'fixed', only replaced.

Buy a new drive and reinstall all your stuff. Then hookup the old drive as a slave, and see if data can be read/recovered. (But with FOUR errors, odds are not that good.)
