Dell Inc. said strong sales throughout its product lineup and its sharp cost cutting helped propel its first-quarter revenue and profit past Wall Street’s forecasts.

Dell reported revenue of $16.1 billion, up 9 percent from the $14.7 billion it posted during the same period last year. It was the first time Dell topped $16 billion in a quarter, CFO Don Carty said on a call with reporters.

The computer maker said net income increased 4 percent, and earnings per share jumped 12 percent, to 38 cents from 34 cents last year.

Wall Street expected earnings of 34 cents on $15.7 billion in revenue.

Carty said Dell saw the largest single-quarter jump in notebook shipments during the quarter, and said retail sales were strong. The company also reported strong sales in foreign markets, which topped U.S. revenue, albeit by a whisker, for the first time in company history.

Despite the growth, Dell was able to accelerate some of its cost-cutting plans, including its layoffs. The company cut 3,200 jobs in the quarter, leaving its quarter-ending head count 7,000 jobs lower than the same time last year, excluding about 2,700 jobs it added with acquisitions.

That puts it within “striking distance” of its 8,900-layoff target, Carty said.

Carty declined to elaborate on layoff plans in Central Texas, but noted that because this is home to one of Dell’s largest employment centers it would see a good proportion of the jobs cuts.

Asked whether he felt employees were looking for closure on the layoffs, Carty said: “I think so. I think we’re close to closure on some of the major (reorganization) going on in the company. But I think our employees are understanding how competitively important it is that the management of cost is not a one-time event, it’s an everyday event. We’re going to be looking for improved efficiency from now until the end of time. But I think a lot of us feel the big head-count excesses that we created in the company are now washed through.”

Simply put, no job will EVER be safe at DELL. He said it, not me.
