So, I work for a company that gets discounts for purchasing Dells, and thus even though I am not a fan, I decided to purchase one.

Big mistake. It was simple. I had a pretty decent machine lined up for around $1k and called in to ask some questions before putting my credit card through. I wanted a GeForce 8600 (best I could get for an Inspiron) and wanted to know if it had DVI only or HDMI and DVI (because I know there are multiple types). I also wanted to know if the motherboard would support SLI if I decided to upgrade. I was told the graphics card would have HDMI and that they would be SLI compatible. So I purchased an HDTV that had HDMI inputs but no DVI... I also purchased a wireless keyboard and mouse from Dell.

When I got my machine, it had no SLI support, and no HDMI output. It also had no PS2 ports? What kind of computer has no PS2 ports?

If I had known that I would have been flat out lied to, I never would have purchased. If he had been honest with me, I would probably have purchased a more expensive XPS. The Inspiron I have has a blu ray player that is absolutely pointless to me because I have no way of hooking it up to my HDTV. What a rip!

Dell salesmen say 'yes' to everything you seem to want, whether it exists or not. "Will it microwave a corndog and receive satellite HBO at the same time?" "Sure it will, just buy it."

You have 21 days from invoice to return it for full credit if it is not what you ordered. It may take some convincing that they sold you HDMI and didn't ship it, and they'll try to stick you with shipping and restocking charges, but at least you'd get out from under owning something you got shilled into buying.

That's not the point. Not only that (and this is not Dell's fault, it's my setup) I have surround speakers hooked up to the TV and would like whatever my TV is showing to go through those speakers. GeForce 8600's w/ HDMI has built in 5.1 sound. That's what I thought I was paying for.

What are the chances I would end up getting what I expected?

Most systems don't have PS/2 ports any longer for the same reason that they no longer have serial or parallel ports - they've been replaced by USB.

I reckon I can handle that.

I just got off the phone w/ customer service. They offered to pay for my return shipping, but first offered a $100 coupon to purchase whatever I wanted to help make up for it. I am going to look on the site to see if there is anything. I was actually impressed with her courteousness.

Whoa, you got a good one. Might wanna run with that. They wouldn't have made that offer right off the top if they didn't know they were wrong.

Might try "just send me what I THOUGHT I was buying, a display card with HDMI and 5.1 sound". (Sound, off a video card? If you say so. I've been out of the business a couple years.)

just return it. Dell "coupon codes" have a habit of mysteriously disappearing or end up being 1/4 of what the agent said they were. Just get rid of the piece of junk inspirons are the worst of the crap and get the worst support too.

See above. Dell's phone support promises are no better than their sales promises.

It should tell you something, that if you inform a Dell rep you are recording the call, they will immediately hang up on you. That is because if you don't tell them, it's not legal evidence. And they have little intent of making good on their promises as stated, ever. The person you're speaking to doesn't even have the authority to MAKE promises. His job is to get you off the phone thinking you've been taken care of.

And from his perspective, you have been.

See? Dell does NOT sell the systems they lead you to believe you are buying. Therefore, that system at that price does not exist.

The most reliable system is one assembled by a local dealer. NOT a chain like Best Buy, but a one-line ad in the phonebook like "I make PCs". For one thing, they won't lie to your face and tell you you're getting something you're not. For another, whatever they sell you, if it breaks you have a physical location where you can plop it on the counter and say "fix it" and they will.

These guys know what components are good and which are bogus, and they know they can't stay in business with glossy ads like Dell uses while selling bogus crap like Dell sells.

To my knowledge there arent any Dells with HDMI outputs.. and even if there were, i dont think they'd pass audio at all, just video (for HDCP compliancy).

SLI isn't something that's going to be on an inspiron, probably ever. SLI tech is primarily only for 3-d Rendering, so you can get it on Precision Workstations and gaming machines.

The only current Dell laptop with SLI is the XPS 1730, which has dual 8700GTs (in certain configurations), and the only desktops with enough PCIe 16x slots for SLI is the XPS 630, 720 and 730.

PS/2 ports are being phased out, almost no new computers have them anymore.

And if you have an HDCP compliant video card (which it should be), cable, adapter, and tv, you should be ok with the blu-ray player.

Edit: You asked where you can buy a similar priced machine, with SLI (i assume you're a gamer, or you wouldnt want that), but you didnt mention your budget.

I don't know about the nVidia 8600 but I have an XPS 600 with nVidia 7800GTX card and it has HDMI.

I have one PS2 port and the fact that the XPS 600 has that was one reason I got this as I happen to really like my Dell Quiet keyboard. It is the only keyboard I have had since I got my first computer in '99 and ordered the Quiet keyboard with it. Dell has sent me other keyboards and I hated every one of them. You can find computers still with PS2 and parallel ports from other manufacturers. Dell was the first to drop these. I'm not too impressed with USB...too many problems with ghost devices and being unable to use a device on any other USB port except one...that all gets old really fast. I think it is stupid to not have the keyboard be PS2 in case of problems.
