Yes I just saw that. A mistake?
I can't see how else a whole sub forum could get locked. |

An experiment, trying to determine how spam gets through. It should be unlocked by the close of business 5-9. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

Could be. There's a couple new mods I think. Rocket has been recruiting too but as I'm dealing with something real life I dont have the time at the moment. Maybe one of the newbie mods goofed.

Rocket there are security flaws in P2Pbb2 code. The security measures are weak in some respects and so anyone with a descent robot script can register new accounts to post the spam. Even the image recognition workarounds can still often be read by such robots. So it's pretty much an automated process. Yup locking the thread will eliminate spam. It'll also nicely prevent any legitimate posts going through.
It's really a question of how much moderation you want to do. You can fight it by making people wait for moderator approval to get in to post, but even that isnt 100%. You can moderate all posts on users that have posted less than 3 or so times before. There are ways to do it but it depends on the version of the software this server is running. I'm betting it's pretty old.

It is not a mistake. The owner is actively addressing the spam issue.
The PHP is not the latest version. Whereas the spammers that get through are either human or using the latest OCR botware to blow by the verification code. Our security is really pretty effective. Look at the memberlist, from most recent, you will see hundreds of gibberish names that can only be spammers. All but a dozen or so were blocked.
Most of this activity comes from countries with marginal economies, where it is possible to pay someone to plant spam and still make money off of it. We are blocking all email addresses from suspect regions, Russia, Nigeria, Colombia, Uruguay.... _________________ Rocke T Sinetist
