I've been reading through the "I Hate Dell" BS since it started. A couple of points I'd like to share:
1) Generational Change: Companies are no longer loyal to employees; when I was in high school 25 yrs ago, the mindset was "the company will take care of you"...this changed about 15 years ago so get over it.
2) You own your career: If you're relying on the old "work hard, keep your head down" mentality, you're sorely in need of a career/psychological makeover. You work for "you" Inc., and if you don't do what you think you need to do to grow your career, you surrender your right to bitch. If Dell is not for you -- leave.
Personally, I very much enjoy working at Dell - many in our community have no idea what it means to work for a large company (either the benefits or the pitfalls) so it's easy to criticize. Wake up, knuckleheads, because were it not for Dell (and other large companies) the economy in Austin would still be dependent on feed stores and textbook sales. To quote Colonel Nathan Jessup in "A Few Good Men": "You need me on that wall".
Yes, Dell is a tough place to work. It's also incredibly rewarding, and I don't just mean economically. I look forward to walking in to work each day because I know I'll be challenged beyond my abilities and surrounded by incredibly bright people -- I grow each and every day, and have a blast in the process.
A message to disenchanted Dell employees: Leave. We can find others who want to be here.
A message to non-Dell employees who come here to bitch: Walk in our shoes for a year, then we'll listen to what you have to say. Until you're willing to do that, shut up (notwithstanding your 1st amendment rights).
For current Dell employees: Stop bitching and start being cultural champions...become engaged and strive to be change agents. This is our time to shine... |

Cultural Champions don't scam the books and get busted for fruad by the SEC. Cultural Champions don't get sued by the State Of New York for fraud. Cultural Champions don't hire 1000 people then 3 months later fire 300 because they don't know how to run a business. Cultural Champions plan for the future and refuse to scam their way from quarter to quarter.
Champions are in it for the long haul.

I worked for Dell until they laid me off today. (wewt!)
I loved my job, for the most part. I think the company is a pile of shit, but the job was pretty good.
Now, my background is business, my interest in Dell was as a career in management or marketing. I fully understand everything that has happened in the last year or so.
It still doesn't make people happy.
I really loved being a DOC Agent. I loved the challenge, I liked the team I worked with, my managers were excellent and I liked the open door policy Dell once had.
However, as a company Dell needs to sort out a few things. Like, what they want to be known for by their customers and by their agents. And right now they just keep spitting on us. _________________ STUPIDITY REIGNS! |

| All I can say is that you will learn, young grasshopper, about how Dell really works. Yes, you should own your career at Dell but that's really not reality. If your manager does not like you in the slightest, he/she can blackball you from taking another job within Dell. That manager will eventually put you on a PIP in a way to get rid of you as well. Sadly I know this process firsthand, having seen it and eventually been through it as well. There are still bits and pieces of me sprawled all over the Round Rock campus having worked there for almost 10 years. I really took pride in what I did during that time. The managers had during that time were super and I was treated well for the most part. I only had an issue with my last manager who was a total buttkisser for upper management and did not care in the slightest if he ran everybody ragged in my department. He had a total disregard for anyone working under him. That's the new Dell way and it will eventually catch up to them. |

Note that the original poster just blabbed and ran.
Note also, that I can firsthand corroborate everything FRM_GTS says.
I had the second-best manager of my 40+ year career at Dell. But all the other managers we had to interface with were 5-star chumps.
My manager got perp-walked out a half hour before the rest of us did. Only the chumps remained. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

I too was walked out at Dell.....
And as for the original poster of this thread....I feel sorry for you to think that it is all about the individual.....sad times did start 15 - 20 years ago with this mentality....still doesn't make it right....so if everyone started to shoot everyone else, well that is just life and you have to get over it.....what a weak thought process in general.... _________________ One person.

To any Dell employees that are stupid enough to try this,
Remember what happened to previous Dell employees that posted here when Dell found out who they were. All of them were terminated for "Code of Conduct" violations. _________________ Q: How do you know Dell Management is lying to you?

Hire me, and I'll say something positive. I said nothing but positive things while I worked there.
But really. Turn yourself in to HR for $50? _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

I'd only turn myself in to HR if it was my last day and no one knew it was but me.
Turning myself in for $50? Who is that poster and what did they put in their coffee today to think that anyone would be dumb enough to bite? |

I am here, and I agree with Kwitcherbitchin. I say to all of you crybabies, quit your bitchin.
I wanna know what magical, mystical, squaky clean company that all of the Dell haters work for?
And we can compare salaries after that. After all, Dell is just so evil. |
