On one of the other boards that I help run, I installed this mod on the boards, and it cut spammers down to exactly 0:

You could set the authentication code to anything, really.. be it "the second word of the url" or what have you.. something that a normal human could easily see but that a bot would not be able to read.
Just a suggestion. |

Thanks diashto. I have no concept of the number of spammers here who are bots, but we do get hit a lot, and other than the security login from a year ago (which may now be bot-readable) we have no protection that I know of.
An earlier version was not even human-readable; one could not reliably distinguish cases, or zero from the alpha O, which led to many failed authentication attempts. I just about stuck my foot through my monitor a number of times, before it was updated.
Look at the memberlist, as it defaults to 'most recent'. You can tell from the registered (gibberish) screennames that most of them are spammers. Somehow, most don't make it as far as posting. Otherwise, spam would outnumber content to an extent an army of moderators couldn't keep up with.
Dearth of ethics is not a concept exclusive to Dell. Life would be a great deal simpler if it were. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist
