I have a dell inspiron 1501 that came with Vista, which I decided completely sucked. I put my old XP pro on it and cannot get the PCI drivers or the USB controller drivers to install, and all I have for sound is the motherboard beep. please help

All of the drivers for that system are found here:

If you can't get it to work, Dell may be able to help you for a fee because it is not the original OS that was installed.

Wrong. Dell just wont help you troubleshoot XP.

They'll only troubleshoot the OS that came with the system.

Your hardware warranty is fully in place.

True - but they'll likely tell you that you need ot do a system restore back to the old OS before they'll troubleshoot the hardware.

The problem you'll be running into is whether ther eis a chipset driver for xp. If there is great. If not you COULD try installing a dell XP cd and using your OEM key. It may or may not allow you to do this. Sometimes the ide drivers and such are built into the dell cd's but not available elsewhere, so if you dont have a dell xp cd you're screwed.

Why do people keep saying that? You really need to get your facts straight. YOU DID NOT JUST VOID ANYTHING.

All that will happen now is Dell telling you that, because you have modified the original OS you have 2 choices for support - one would be to format and reload the original OS, or two you can pay a minimum $129 to Dell On Call and they can support it in its current configuration with NO guarantees that the support will be even helpful, and chances are you'll need to reinstall anyways.

Why oh why do people keep perpetuating the myth of voided warranties?

$129 sounds pretty voided to me. Specially when:

1, Best Buy will come to your house and fix hardware AND software issues for about the same price, plus parts if any, and it doesn't take 4 hours on the phone to get them to do it.

2, If Dell weren't so intent upon dodging their obligations, they wouldn't use OS configuration as a stonewall to hardware warranty service. If their script monkeys knew any more about computers than how to logon, they could make the distinction between HW and SW issues.

For that matter, if Dell expended as much time and effort FIXING issues as they do DODGING them, they'd be Apple.

Very true Rocke. I was just clarifying the errors in the above posts.

Dell On Call is your last chance to keep what you like without having to format and reinstall. Yes, there's a fee involved, but no company should be obligated to support what didn't ship originally.

Once it becomes "after market" then you're pretty much in the fee based world anyways, regardless of if it's a computer or what have you.

People keep with this "myth" because it is what Dell techs tell you. Practically anything done to the computer, even adding a second hard drive, voids the hardware warranty. Setting up RAID on an XPS that didn't ship with RAID turned on voids the hardware warranty. Now we have Microsoft pushing Service Pack 3 for XP but Dell owners cannot install it unless they no longer have the machine under Dell warranty.

I wonder how Dell is going to handle the warranty for all the machines folks buy after June 30 when Microsoft cuts off XP being sold on OEM machines. Dell is using the Microsoft "loophole" to let buyers get XP installed on their new machines. One has to buy Vista Business or Ultimate and then invoke downgrade rights. Anyone can do this and, once invoked, Dell will install XP Pro at the factory and ship it with the Vista disk on the side.

What happens to the hardware warranty when the user decides later to upgrade the machine to Vista? There is a lot of interest in the scheme Dell has announced because so many want to avoid Vista entirely. I bet these buyers will not think about the warranty if they decide to uninstall XP Pro and use their Vista disk and we all know Dell won't warn them of the ramifications of doing that if they later need hardware support under warranty. I hadn't really thought about this until just now. I need to go back to some forums and post this as there are a lot of folks very happy they can still buy a computer with XP installed on it after June 30th but this little hardware warranty problem might put a damper on that. Folks are already upset that if they install XP Service Pack 3 that they void their Dell warranty.

Where are you getting that information from, if I may ask? Last time I was there, unless it was in BETA stage, it was still supported fully. If the SP or update or whatever was in a BETA or RC stage then you were told to remove it or use System Restore first before any support would be offered, but in no way did this "void" the warranty.

I'd like to know where you're getting this information?

I haven't asked specifically as to SP3. But when I had my earlier 8300 Dimension that came with XP Pro SP1a and SP2 was released, I was told by several Dell phone techs that installing SP2 would void the warranty (I bought a 3 year warranty with the machine). This wasn't a beta version or RC. It was the official release of SP2. These were techs in Phoenix (if I remember correctly). It was the Small Business Division Warranty techs I think that I reached on repeat cue for a hardware problem. They were really good techs.

I was also basing my comment on XPS techs in Texas telling me, when the XPS 600 was new, that I could not turn on RAID without voiding the warranty because RAID was supposed to have been chosen before the machine was built and could not be chosen later. Then last summer, I was told that by buying a second hard drive and installing it that I had voided the warranty. (I didn't buy it so I could turn on RAID ...just needed a bigger drive). But that was because I didn't buy the drive from Dell...what a scam...the exact same Seagate SATA 300 drive that Dell sells but I bought it here locally and didn't have to pay the substantial shipping charge to Hawaii.

I got a tirade of a lecture from the tech about how I couldn't make any changes to the OS or hardware without voiding the warranty UNLESS I had bought the drive from Dell. I thought this tech must be rather new so I asked and was treated to the entire history of this person's 12 years with Dell (most of it not as a phone tech and much of it in management). I just a had a very quick question (wasn't calling to cry about some problem that I caused when installing the drive) which this tech refused to answer because I had voided the warranty. (I called back and the second tech graciously answered my question and the conversation took less than 2 minutes).

So, I made that comment based on these experiences. I certainly hope I am wrong as it makes no sense to tell customers they can't install a service pack if they have a warranty on their Dell.

Just using Dell On Call as a lead in, it was mandatory for us to check if they had SP2 installed and if they didn't, we had to help them with it.

This is why I'm puzzled that any tech would tell you such bullshit about voiding a warranty if you updated to SP2 or SP3. These are REQUIRED if you want to keep your machine humming.

You either got a n00b, or a "tech" that wouldn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

I suspect the difference here is that the hardware techs are told something different from the Dell On Call techs. The right hand doesn't know what the left is doing (or care) sort of thing. The hardware techs (although usually not the repeat cue warranty techs) are likely told to look for reasons to NOT honor any hardware warranty and to never give the customer the benefit of the doubt when something is in question.

I agree that installing a service pack when it is issued/released to WU is something especially the average customer should do and they should not need to worry that if they do so that it will void any warranty.
