I was a Dell employee for over a year. During that entire time I was a lvl 1 tech. I shook Michael Dell's hand as he walked through the call center just after it opened. And I told my manager to go f**k himself right before they walked me out the door.

First off, I'd like to say sorry to most of the people on this site. For they probably made this site because of me. I'd like to say sorry to all the people I put on hold for 10 minutes because I wanted to walk around. I'd like to say sorry to all the people I hung up on because they're annoying idiots and I didn't want to deal with them. I'm sorry to all the people that called up a little upset and I aggrovated them on purpose just to laugh at their pain.

Now that I'm done with appologizing to just about everyone I've ever talked to while at Dell, I'd like to say screw you. Screw you to all the retarded idiots who don't know where the "any key is" (god there's alot of you) Screw you to all the retards that don't know the difference between the monitor and the computer. Screw you to all the people that make me drop my IQ level 50 points just so you can understand me. Screw you to all the people that expect us to "just send someone out" Screw you to all you freaking bastards that think yelling , demenoring me over the phone, or asking to talk to my manager will get you what you want.

Lastly, I'd like to say thank you. Thank you to all the people who know how to open the computer and not spend 15 minutes trying to open the monitor.... Thank you to everyone that can take directions well. I once instructed a little old lady over the phone to take out her motherboard and replace it with a new one that we sent her. She had no freaking clue what she was doing, but god damnit, she listened to me and she did exactly what I said. It took a few hours, but damnit we got that computer working!

Love me or hate me, I don't care. Those aren't my goals here on the forum. But I am going to listen to all of your stories and maybe get some pleasure out of your pain once again.

Mods relocate posts to match the content (as they read it) to the forum heading.

Any time your job is being the one who 'knows something' talking to folks who don't, your challenge is going to be getting the knowledge across to them. Obviously not what you wanted to do. (Could you tolerate stupid customers for $15 an hour? For $25? Getting warmer.) If work was always easy and pleasant, they'd call it 'fun'.

Thanks for the look inside the mind of the people on the phone at Dell (hastening to add, "though not all"). A lot of people bring their issues to work and inflict them on the defenseless. If Dell management wasn't so adept at this, Dell employees would feel less inclined to get even by passing the grief on to customers. (Paraphrased from my Psyc 203 textbook--this is a known and very common phenomenon.)

Before you bash the techs at Dell, please remember turn over in all call centers are high, and Call center techs just rotate through contract/company after contract/company until they get their heads out of the butts and get a government job. So if you talked to me as a RR customer you may have talked to me as a Dell customer the following year when I was at Sitel. You people think that this is a DELL issue, you're crazy, it's a CALL CENTER issue. You listen to idiots who bitch and moan on a daily basis because they can't get online to email their friends some stupid joke or that they feel it's DELL's fault they got a virus when their 16 yr old son was downloading songs and porn from p2p programs... It's not a warranty issue it's a YOU issue. When in retail we sold HP/Compaq, Sony and Toshiba products guess what no difference... I use to love when customer's told me their going to buy a DELL because they don't have the same issues... They will because YOU are the ISSUE!! Then when working on DOC contract, get the opposite response, I'm buying a HP because they don't have these issues... They will when YOU buy it!!! (cuz it's YOU again!!!) Or I love when a customer tells you what the competitor's warranties cover... (nope it is what you WISHED they covered) I know because I was the tech that fixed their (hp/compaq and toshiba's products)

GREAT post, I agree with everything you said 100%.

After working in call centres for several years I can honestly say I hate people and have lost all faith in the human race.

I believe I was hired because of my background as a 911 dispatcher (2 years) and a paramedic (10 years). Alas, being a dispatcher and a computer phone tech are night and day different. A few times I had to tell them to shut up and listen to me. I was giving life sustaining instructions. As a tech, there is nothing life ending about the hard drive crashing. At one point I was encouraged to use my 911 mentality. HA! That would be the quickest route to a pink slip. But, after a year I'll take the pink slip. I admit working in a call center is not for me. I have had more migraines and physical aliments this past year than I've had in my entire 44 years. I knew nothing about computers when I was hired and pointed that out during the interviews. I was told that based on my MA in communications and job experience that in "6 months I would be off the phones and placed in a position that would be win-win". Lie. Although, I will admit that I had a great mentor and a manager that was bending over backwards to get me that "win-win"...right up until the moment they were both walked out in October. In Dec. I became very ill and went on STD and haven't been back yet. I'm frantically looking for other employment to fed my family and am not above flipping burgers for their sake...lol. Stress is the second silent killer and it almost did me in. For all of you that can handle a call center, my hat is off to you. Like teachers, you are underpaid, overworked and forgotten about. I know my limits and I've over reached mine.

There's nothing silent about stress. At all.

Stress, especially in that environment, is more common than people would like to admit. The gross realization here is that, the Management and the brass don't care at all and could care less if prompted to do so.

In all my life, in all the jobs I've held and others around me have held, I'm surprised and almost shocked to learn that the suicide rate ain't higher when associating yourself with a job like that. Though never actually witness to a suicide related to this environment, I was privy to at least 2 that did occur in this city over the last 5 years - related directly or indirectly to the call center world.

I think the one thing in particular that amazes me most is the amount of people that were desperate to get IN to this world, and not OUT of it. Rose colored glasses perhaps? Anyone that's been exposed to this life has seen first hand just how scummy it really is, and how deep the poison runs in your veins from the time you don your first headset, right up until the day that you either become accustomed to the taste of "the brown" on your tongue, or you burn out.

But stress ain't silent at all. It's just not talked about because of the stigma attached.

If you are killing yourself over a job/career then you have more issues than work alone. If "You" (as in 'whoever') considered suicide instead of quitting 'your' job (call center or otherwise) have more issues than a headset can provide. Since someone else brought up the subject let me add my two cents to those that have gone before us (THANKS FOR CHLORINATING THE GENE POOL!! I can only hope you did it before contaminating it!) If that offended people get over it! You are not the only one who knows someone close that took their own life.

I usually don't reply to stupid posts, but I'm making an acception this time. First of all, when I said that "it almost did me in" I was referring to a physical state...tired all the time, not able to focus, loss of appetite, and other symptoms associated with what stress can do to the immune system, etc. Secondly, Cyberspaz must be privy to the intricate workings of the human mind and all of its intricate psychological makeup. Your blanket statement of just quitting a job that isn't your cup of tea is indicitive of someone who doesn't grasp the bigger picture of being responsible for someone other than yourself. I'm not going to address the suicide issue. It's unfair to have a battle of wits with someone who is unarmed.

Even in a situation where one is responsible for more than themselves, if the job is slowly killing you, then yes it is a good time to find a new one or a new vocation entirely. I won't get into semantics or start a flame war, but it ills me to see people using the "not just me to think about" crutch so often.

I know of a lot of people that have families to feed, ailing parents to care for, or small children to rear themselves because him telling you he loved you, didn't mean he wanted to stay with you. These people can see danger, and they elect to move on. Rougher conditions is a given most of the time, and setting yourself up back at the bottom of the totem pole, but the reality is, if you can spot the danger and can feel the danger, using a crutch is going to accomplish what? You, in a weakened state, are far less viable than you in a new job with new struggles.

Any job that sees one experience physical deficiencies is a job that is not worth having. Leave the crutches at home.
