so i have my inspiron 6000 laptop from sept 2005, obviously the battery is FUBARd long time ago but for the last while i have been having major performance issues. No, Im not talking about erectile dysfunction. Basically, ive reformatted this thing use the dell restore to factory settings option multiple times. Each time it seems to get slower and slower and so i recently did a hardware diagnostic, using the diagnostic from dell...talk about due diligence, and nothing came up!
basically, the computer is generally slow but its really hot and the every little bit the fan just kicks into overdrive and is super loud and then my computer slows down even more. I am going to do a further diagnostic tonite, but im sure it wont yield any results...any suggestions?!?!

It's overheating. Dells do that. Have you removed the dust buildup from the cooling system? If not, it's lucky it still works at all.

Get canned air from a photo or electronic store, take the thing out on the porch, and blow air into all the vent holes until dust stops coming out. More thorough is removing the keyboard and getting down to where you can see the fins are clean.

i think your llaptop is around the same era as mine, and yeah overheating is huge roblems on the laptops, on mine, you can actually take out the two fans and really clean out the little radiators. i recommend it.

Heat buildup slows down the processor and speeds up the fan. Yes, that's the whole problem. Clean it out and see.
