NEW YORK (AP) - Dell Inc. is closing its 140 "direct store" kiosks in the U.S. as it moves to sell its products through retailers like Best Buy Co., the computer maker said Wednesday.
The 120-square-foot kiosks, set up at malls and airports around the country, let customers speak with sales representatives about computers, digital cameras, printers and other products. They had room for about 12 products shoppers could touch and feel before they bought them directly from Dell.
The world's No. 2 computer maker, which built its business on selling PCs directly to customers, has been expanding into retail to better compete with rivals such as No. 1 Hewlett-Packard Co. Besides Best Buy, Dell sells computers at stores such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Staples Inc. in the U.S.
Dell said it remains committed to its direct-sales business.
The company is not closing its kiosks outside the U.S.
Shares of the Round Rock, Texas, company fell 16 cents to $20.40 in midday trading.

|
|
| It is being reported that Dell terminated the kiosk staff but forgot to notify the employees that they were terminated. When they showed up for work mall security was advised to escort them away from the mall. When Dell realized that they never notified the kiosk workers they were terminated they made a conferance call to notify the general public. The soul of Dell is alive and well. All ye who thought ought were wrong. |

There is nothing good about Dell, even if you are Michael himself.
His net worth is only that of the company, and the stock today is barely worth half what it was in 1998, 10 years ago. No, it didn't split, it just sat there sinking. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

I am a dissatisfied Dell customer who mailed my hunk of junk back recently. Even though the product stinks and the support is lousy, I know where the blame lies and that is with upper management.
My heart goes out to all you good folks who just lost your jobs BUT try to be positive.
Put Dell behind you and look for a company who will value your worth.
Good luck to you all.

I was also a former Dell employee in DDS and I actually left on the 4th of January because I felt like my management was lying to me and it looks now like I was right. After the Walmart deal went through we were all worried but when the best buy/staples announcement was made we all knew it was just a matter of time. While I was still there anyone who voiced any concern about the future of DDS was severely reprimanded by our management. After the best buy staples announcement one of my coworkers made a post on Direct2Dell voicing his concern about DDS in light of Dell's new retail presence. We were all encouraged to use Direct2Dell to give feedback and were even told than the posts were anonymous, well guess what?; they were not. That employee was having a one on one with our RM within a day (our RM funny enough was one of the few who were able to retain a job with dell). I even confronted my manager about the changes and he told me that I had nothing to worry about. I WAS worried and started to look elsewhere and eventually left on my own accord.
My heart goes out to all the men and women of DDS who lost their jobs today. At the same time I am happy to see Dell doing poorly and I hope the company goes under. Any company that treats its customers and employees the way in which Dell did (and still does for all the poor souls still there) does not deserve to exist.
sincerely,

Again, my heart is with all of the decent and hardworking Dell employees but let me tell you that Dell is done.
I was convinced to buy Dell from a local Geek, a charlatan who works for the law firm where I am employed, whom I employed on the side to set up my home office.
My Dell died within a few days. Dell tech (offshore) sent out a tech who replaced the hard drive with a refurbuished drive, it died within 2 hrs.
Thanks to blogs such as this, I knew better than to play the game of replace the hard drive, replace the motherboard, etc etc and sent the junk back for a full refund on my credit card.
I am now happily sending this post on my new Gateway. Prior to owning (for a short time), that insufferable Dell, I had been using Gateways for years.
But, I digress.
Prior to entering Law, I worked for years at TWA, an incredible company. Team spirit, brotherhood, hardwork, achieving together. Then it died. Carl Icahn came in and destroyed us. Then when AA bought the remnants of TW, Carty (a former Dell exec) screwed all the remaining TW employees who were supposed to be given jobs at AA. While I left before this episode, many of my friends suffered.
The moral of the story is-there is life after Dell. I know because there was life after TWA. Dell is dead, you are not.
Dell screwed up, you did not.
Fight for whatever severance pay, unemployment, health insurance etc that is yours, give it to Dell -and then,
go out and find your destiny . I guarantee you that you will do fine.
Best of luck to you all,
Maggie |

I remember when i was told on my way to work to call the conference number, i was literally in my car en route to the mall (which was about 30 minutes away) so 10 minutes out i found out i had no job and our kiosk was all packed up, crooks stole my hat which i accidentally left in the kiosk wrap the night before when i closed, nothing fancy just a plain baseball cap, but my hat nonetheless. best part is im a current college student using that job for some easy money, and now i had to find a way to pay for rent and tuition without a job.
luckily enough my GM, and a fellow employee got picked up by Staples shortly there after, and now im a PC Tech for Staples, selling and servicing dells, isnt it wonderful how that turns around, i purposely point all the customers to the HP's, Compaq's, and Toshiba's.
god i still hate dell with a passion. |
