| I'm supposed to start working for Dell through QualX, and have a business card for doing work on the side. Compensation for gas is virtually nil (i.e. QualX gets 35 miles gratis for each call). I would like to hand out my card to happy customers for business unrelated to Dell's domain, such as setting up networks and such, and possibly helping the customers' friends'. What are the general rules concerning this and can it be done discretely? |

I used to work for Banctec. It was both a conflict of interest an insurance nightmare for BT. Jurys being what they are, BT could be liable for my screw ups. It is also how I got enough business to start out on my own. Some of my most loyal customers are ones I went the extra mile for to solve an issue between Dell, BT and the computer in question. Installations which paid little for the time involved was always a good source of clientele. If they can't install it, they are in real trouble when it comes to fixing it. People gladly pay to not have to deal with Dell tech-non-support.
Good Luck,

| Thanks! That's encouraging. So you say that a lot of your "customers" would pay you to complete the install, load the drivers, etc.? Leaving the customer to finish an operating installation seems a pretty shoddy way to do business to me, though Dell is beginning to address that now by pre-imaging the hard drives they replace. |

As a tech support agent, I can tell you that yes, a lot of customers are totally clueless on OS reinstalls and driver installation (it takes a lot of time to do, and we're expected to keep a 20 minute average handle time, so...). It wouldn't take as long if I weren't having to type the instructions to the customer, look up drivers, copy the link, paste it to them, wait for them to download it....
So yes, I'd say that it would be a lucrative opportunity if you are able to get it. |

| Thinking further about the "opportunity" qualx and others offer to service Dell systems, I'd day it sucks. It used to be the the service man was provided with a vehicle and paid for both travel time and service. With Qualx, you burn your own gas (up to 35 miles each call) with no compensation for mileage, and earn a measly $32.00. Obviously Qualx knows this and recruits as many techs as possible, knowing most will eventually quit. Without "fringe benefits" this job makes no sense at all. And if you're qualified for this job, you're most likely qualified for several others, so my advice is to avoid the hassle and keep looking! |

Many of my BT cow irkers used the positon of field tech to put on their resume and/or stay employed during a dry time. One gent was offered a position by someone he was working at. Don't forget, you have to start somewhere.

I go to so many large cutomers that I could probably get hired if there were an opening. Problem is after being a field tech for nearly 10 yrs it would be hard to go back and sit at a bench! Not to mention the office politics bullshit. I see it every day and it reminds me that I would rather collect unemplyment than go back to that despite how QXS treats it's employees. |

Besides that, I figure the odds of getting laid by some gorgeous young babe who is so happy that I fixed her laptop is about a million to one. That means I only have roughly 994,000 to go! I can't quit now! |
