...don't bother with a 2 weeks notice. Wait until your last day, then just leave. Here's why.

On Monday, July 2, I went to my boss at 4 PM and gave my two weeks notice. He was cool with it, wished me good luck. I thought I was doing the right thing, giving a notice, etc. I was walked out at 7:30 PM and am now enjoying an extended vacation before starting my next job. It seems that once you tell Dell that you are leaving, you're gone that day. Why? Because of the confidental information I had access too (or so I was told). I can imagine they've had problems in the past with employees leaving and maybe screwing someone/something up, but I had no intention of going that. My boss tried to keep me on for the two weeks (I was a good employee, really), but nope, not going to happen. Oh well. Besides the management and occasional irate customer, I actually enjoyed working for tech support.

By the way, if you ever want to speak to an english speaking person in tech support, there's a group in Oklahoma City that are "resolution experts" (the group I was a part of), and you can get ahold of them at 1-800-624-9896 extension 7133843.

Maybe that's why dell like to set up shop it states that are "at-will", meaning they can let you go at anytime for any reason....?

Just wanted to give a heads-up to anyone beforing they attempt a 2 weeks notice too.

Did you get paid for the 2 week notice you gave?

Dell continues to de-evolve. That policy is clinically paranoid. What could you possibly do in the last 2 weeks that you couldn't have done the hour before you told them you were leaving?

BTW, where in OKC are you going? There are no jobs in Austin, and I liked OKC living there in the 80s (equipment engineer at Ch 4).

When I decided to quit 2 years ago, I took two weeks off. I used vacation time and PBA. Since my department had just been eliminated and I was in a new department, they tried to prevent me from using PBA and other allocated time off. Basically, I went to HR, told them my old department's rules, then showed them where I had gotten the OK to take the time off before I went to the new department and they said OK, take your time off. I burned every bit of time off that Dell would give me in a year.
During those two weeks off (PAID) I took training for a new job (along with my GF). The Sunday before I was suppose to be back at work, I emailed my new manager, told him I was quiting, told him why (not his fault) that I was fed up with Dell "loyalty" to its workers (and by extension, its customers). The email went to about 10 people in Dell, non of whom really gave a SH** that I was quiting and why. Since then, BP is down, life is easier and I am making about 35% more than I was at Dell, and this year my GF will by making almost 75% more than she made at Dell. And that does NOT include the tax free per diem we are paid. (Almost $7K a year)
Yes there is life after Dell and it can be pretty damn good and pay better if you are willing to look for it, and work for it!
Don't give Dell any notice if you dont have to when you plan to leave. Loyalty is a two way street. Dell can't spell loyalty, so why should they expect it??

Going to work for the state at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission in their IT department. A lot more money, more along the line of what I want to do (supporting their internal applications, servers, networking, etc.).

Yeah, I was pretty shocked. My manager was a very cool guy, and he came up to me at the end of the day and said, "Do you want the good news or the bad news?" I opted for the good news, and he said, "You get to sleep in tomorrow." haha, oh well.

In the beginning, it wasn't a bad job, until more and more management came on and everything began being micromanaged (needing approval to make outbound calls...if the queue was too busy, can't make the call, customer has to wait, which I think is piss-poor customer service). I stopped checking my voicemail the last few days because it was too much of a hassle to call people back. Oh well.

I find it interesting that you were walked off site, and not paid for your notice. In Canada, if you give notice and they opt to walk you off immediately, they are obligated to pay you for the notice given in lieu.

Risky card to play, but if you are skating a thin line, I suppose you could wait til your last day, give 2 weeks and hope and pray they walk you off. There's an extra 2 weeks pay and a new job.

Nice little bonus. I've heard they have stopped that practice of walking you out if notice is given, though on the other hand I still hear buzz that some exceptions are made.
