I went to goodwill a few weeks ago. They had a XPS T450. The price was $91.00. I asked a employee if that was the right price. She went and checked. She came back and said no the price was $15.71. So i got it. I brought it home turned it on it took 20 mins to boot. I could tell it had never been reformatted because the Dell OEM logo was on the 98 Boot screen. Also Dell OEM info was on system properties. I know that can be put back but not many people know how. But anyway the system has McAfee and Norton installed. Olderv version of McAfee and Norton 2005. So i uninstall both them. I download AVG Internet security because it finds spyware and adware as well as viruses. I scanned and found over 3000 infected files. That was alot. It even detected a boot virus when it scanned on startup. So i removed the viruses and still the registry was screwed up so i reformatted the drive. Now it works like a charm. But the old 13 GB drive is going south. So soon in my main computer im going to get a new drive soon and put the drive from it in the Dell. This dell has a VooDoo 3000 AGP Video card. _________________

It had McAffee and Norton and STILL had 3000 infected files? Well that tells us something we've always suspected, doesn't it?
Old boxes work just fine. Mine's the one before that, XPS-R400. Does standard tasks as fast or faster than 3G P4s on WXP. Long as I don't try to do things with it that were the domain of Silicon Graphics back then, like compile movies. Plays them fine though, where I've seen WXP stumble. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

Nope its a Goodwill in Georgia. I stop by everyweek. I hope to find a Dimension 4100 or something maybe a computer with atleast 40 GB harddrive will show up someday. I was kinda fooled by this one though. I opened the case inside the store the drive did look brand new. But its only 13 GB IBM drive and clicks like older drives do. But it still works i have tested the drive with Hitachi diagnostics drive fine no errors. _________________

Those old white boxes worked fine and many still do. I have a Precision 410 work station with 512mb RAM and dual 500 CPUs. Computers from back when Dell made decent computers and had good support. Both have gone south since those days!
And it boots faster than then 8400 I have with 1gig RAM.
YEA, run AVG, works great! _________________ rustyboots (i use to slave at dell) |

Well i stoped by goodwill today. They had a custom built maybe a home buit but it has an Asus board i believe AMD Anthlon SLOT A 700 Mhz 256 MB PC133 Ram. I bring it home hook it up stays on for a few mins then i hear a sirene beep. I google the beep i find out it could be bad CPU or CPU over heating. Anyway for now i took out the ram and the ATI Radaon 7500 64 MB DDR AGP Videocard i put it in this Dell XPS T450 Also put in the 256 MB stick of ram. That brings the ram up to 512 MB and it upgrades the voodo 16 mb card to 64 MB. Now this computer screams. _________________
