RESOLVED: the part is F5995 and is referenced as PLT;MET;SPRT;VGA;NBK;INSP;700M

(had a 3rd case and Dell sent a WHOLE BUNCH of parts as they still couldn't identify it, but once they arrived I got the part# from the packing slip; previous tech must have sent it back with old motherboard or something)

I am a Qualxserv field tech that repairs Dell stuff.

A couple of times now I have seen Inspiron 700M that has had a previous tech work on it and replace the motherboard, but is unable to re-mount the heatsink assembly over the CPU.

Wasting hours on phone with Dell Service Provider Queue accomplishes nothing as the part that the screws fasten to on the other side of the motherboard is not listed as a seperate part#.

Have always had to send back to depot.

I was just wondering if any of the other Qualxserv or Banctech people that pop up here now and again have seen this issue?

Go to support.dell.com and find the Inspiron 700M Service Manual.
Look at "System Components" and find the exploded-view diagram.

Look at the System Board (labeled"6"). On the left side in between the PC Card Reader and the CPU Fan is a silvery squarish block. That seems to be the part that is always missing by the time I get to the site after the other tech visited already.

Directly under that silvery squarish block, on the bottom side of the motherboard, sits the CPU hanging upside down from the bottom with the heatsink fastened below it.

I imagine that the heatsink assembly screws go through the board into the silvery thing, because without it the screws don't grip anything and just fall out.

Does this part have a name or a part#?

Or is Dell sending the wrong motherboard or what?

Customers get very frustrated when neither the onsite tech or Dell seems to be able to identify parts let alone fix the system.

Considering that post was from a year ago, and it said resolved on the top? I'm going to guess that it's been taken care of. Wink
