I have a Dell Dimension 8400....I bought a new case (Antec 900) so I could build a better cooling machine (the Dell doesn't do well cooling-wise with a new GeForce 8800) and wanted to use the "guts" from my Dell. Well, I found out right away that the motherboard won't work...
My question...what other parts are "Dell Only"?
Thanks for any help |

Most likely the power supply. In the past they were made so that they only fit Dell cases. |

| The CPU Bracket , at least for my dimension 4500, may not be a standard Intel design, making aftermarket parts a no-no |

I forgot to mention that I replaced the power supply (the stock would not power the 8800 card).
My real concern is are the HDD, DVD/CD, and monitor capable of being used in another, non-Dell, case and MoBo? |

The parts you mentioned should all be standard parts with nothing proprietary to Dell on them. _________________ Q: How do you know Dell Management is lying to you?

Okay, here's the deal...I have a Dell 8400. I put a new 550watt power supply and a ne wGeForec 8800GTX card in. The heat that the 8800 generates in the Dell case is just too high for me. So, I bought an Antec 900 case (has mucho fans). I was going to just take the "guts" from my Dell and put them into the new case. Suprise 1, Dell motherboard won't fit. Solution was to buy a new ASUS P5B Motherboard. Took my RAM and CPU off the Dell MoBO and put them onto the ASUS. Took the 8800 card and sound card from the Dell and put them on the ASUS. Connected the DVD, CD, and Hard Drive from the Dell to the ASUS. Plugged my Dell 2005FPW into the 8800 card now in the Antec case. Turn on the power...all the fans start up, the hard drive "beeps", but the monitor stays dark.
Any ideas? |

| Usually if it beeps (which is probably coming from the motherboard, not the harddrive) it means the ram or the video card isn't seated correctly. Try reseating the componants. |

are you sure all the power connections are in place? It could beep if it is getting no CPU power, or if a component is not seated properly. The part I would be most concerned about is the CPU, so I would check SPU power first, then check if the RAM is seated [meaning re-seat the ram] then re seat any other peripherals. IF this does not work, pull everthing out, and add it back one component at a time, starting ith RAM one stick at a time.
You could be smart about this and check the error code on the MOBO LED display. Oops, the P5B doesn't have one of them. Anyway, the advice is good... that advice being RTFM. It lays out troubleshooting procedures and makes sense of the error codes. _________________ "The art of Engineering is knowing what you can safely ignore." -Dr. H. Hess

If you changed the motherboard then you will need to buy another copy of XP. Repair install may work but you will have to call Misrosoft to get it activated on the new motherboard. Use the COA on the Dell case. When you load Windows XP you should see on the bottom right hand corner of the screen by the clock 30 days to activate. Click that and put the 25 product code from the dell case. It may activate then but no garentees. _________________

There are 3 things that affect video(assuming monitor is ok) Video card, power, and the processor. Guess what? I think the Dell processor is probably not compatible with the ASUS.
