I fell for the 199$ (non-refunable) scam to get computer fixed..then they want 399$ more because of "unforseen" probs.

Dell is one of the largest and most effective arguments for MAC. They convinced me.

The board of directors and DELL himself need to get bombarded with these complaints...

I even wrote an email (form of course) to his humanitarian foundation..that he gives our money to...to make him look good.

Dell's repair is contracted out. According to many customer accounts and two people I knew personally who worked there, the contractor is at least a 4-star hosebag.

Dell is a strong argument for technical self-sufficiency. Diagnosing stuff yourself and buying from newegg.com or ebay. It's not in everyone's nature to do that readily. The next best alternative is local repair shops. They have a commitment to the community. That is, if they routinely doubled their repair estimates, they would go out of business. Dell's contractor is under no such restraint, so they do whatever they think they can get away with.

It's just a fact of business in the 21st century. I don't like it any better than you do. I'm technically self-sufficient on most stuff, but boy do I get nervous when I have to trust the repair of something over my head to someone else (like the central air or major car repairs). The solution is, finding a service provider you trust to cover the areas you're not proficient in. Obviously, Dell is not such a provider when it comes to paid repairs.
