I'm having same problem as another reader,My soon to be ex put administrator password in my laptop before walking out. I tryed to be slick
and bought new win xp home OS cd. I wiped the system and reinstalled
windows OS. I'm replacing xp pro with xp home. Got into boot with no problem.the Computer used to start windows but stopped at enter password
now after reinstalling the OS it will not start up. I have to reboot off the
reboot one time menu and then It starts and works fine Any Ideas.

Does it ask you for a password before or after the loading windows xp screen?

it used to ask for a password with windows xp probefore it would open since I wiped the hard drive and put in xp home It now will open with a black screen asking to strike f1 to retry or f2 to go to set up.pressing f1 does nothing ,f2 goes to set up page. If I boot up and f12 it goes to one time boot menu and I hit enter on the harddrive in the boot order and windows will open fine. whether I hibernate or shut down computer I have to do this procedure every time to start windows

It's not a password issue. Had your ex been more resourceful at glomming the laptop, there's a BIOS password that would have prevented even reinstalling Windows. Dell will give out that password, but you have to spend hours on the phone and all your owner ID paperwork has to be in order--if they typo'd your zipcode, you're SOL.

F2, go to 'boot sequence', make sure that 'harddrive' is one of the selected choices. It may be that simple, but it may not. Installing Windows shouldn't have altered that setting. See if there's an entry for 'boot options' in Windows Help. I've seen this happen, but not what caused it or where the 'switch' is that fixes it.
