when staring up my inspiron 6000 it just repeatedly cycles back to the bios screen and eventually shows a hard drive error. i tried another drive and the machine starts up fine, and i tried my drive in another machine and it also wouldn't start. what can i do, there are files on that drive i really need back . shame on me for not backing them up since may. |

Hello basketcase,
I had a similar situation with my home build desktop about a week ago.

I downloaded Knoppix 4 (v. 5.0.1 wouldn't run) and burned it into a 700MB CD. Knoppix is an open source free version of Linux that runs straight from your CD drive. It has applications that allow you to backup your HD (if its not 100% dead!) via email, network, another HD, or burn it into a CD or DVD.
Another popular option seems to be a program called SpinRite. It's not free but it has some great reviews and it is even favoured by the fat guy on "Call for Help" on TechTV. I have not tried it myself.
Knoppix is an excellent option. Hope this helps. _________________ Don't be lazy, build your own computer... |
