The Dell issued copy of NIS 2005 Anti Spam is defective. Someone else besides me has had to have discovered this by now. NOT the image file pre-installed on the harddrive partition. If your machine came with it pre-installed and is re-installed when you run the "dell pc restore" from the hidden partition using the control f11 key, then you are fine....

BUT try this....uninstall it and use the damm 15 month subscription CD that came in the box! (NIS 05 anti spam) It installs OK and everything works EXCEPT the anti spam section. It says refreshing no matter what you do. I have worked on this for 6 months now on and off. I have called to try to get them to replace it but they wont. (except they give me the same dam cd that is defective)

They act like I am the problem, or they shuffle you in robo phone hell, or you get someone you can not understand ect ect ect.) The last round the dell tech lied to me and told me he took an XPS and uninstalled the factory preinstalled version and installed from the disc and saw what I was talking about but he said it was because there were still registry entries for NIS so in order to really fix it I would have to run the restore CD's and then install NIS from the CD.

He said he did it and it worked fine. So I swapped harddrives and conducted the experiment. It still does the same thing. I tried it on 6 different dell machines. on a XPS, insperion 6000, a 9100, and 2 dimension 2400. NO matter what you do the anti spam does not work and just says refreshing. They sent me 3 replacement cd's 6 months apart and they all do the same thing...so go figure its not a damaged cd and if it was, what are the odds of me getting 2 damaged cd's 6 months apart?

They are driving me F'in batty! I have tested it under every possible circumstance and it does the same thing no matter what. Symantec's fix it tool does squat and the web site knowledge base doesn't even come close to the topic...arghhhhhhh! In NIS 05 anti spam ( the defective copy that is) if you click any of the controls you get and unknown error "unspecified error. : res://c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\antispam\NASplug.dll/nasstatus.htm" Nothing on the web site is of any help. Dell says Symantec is to blame, Symantec says dell is to blame and then dell says well you bought it from QVC so there to blame. OMG! All I asked for was NIS 06 to fix the damm problem but because there are not enough people reporting this problem, they will not acknowledge it. I guess most people are just not as crazy as me to spend hours on the phone & PC fighting with them...... and I think dell banks on that to some exstent!

Here is why I think they are not getting calls on it yet. They issued it preinstalled on machines with a 15 month subscription. (I activated mine around Xmas 05) OK so the image file on the hard drive partition has a slightly different build. I checked and they are different build numbers...but unfortunately I do have them for this post at the moment. But I noted that they were differnt even though they look and act exactly the same. The pre-installed copy works fine so people have not used the cd and if they have had the OS go to shit, then they just run the dell pc restore which uses the good copy off the harddrive....but wait until you have harddrive failure and no longer have f11 to fall back on. Then you have pop in a new harddrive and have to run the standard generic restore cd and install NIS from the cd, and then guess what???? then you will find your self were I am.

OK so yea I could just go to staples and buy the NIS 06 version and be done with it but its the principal of the whole thing. Dell will not admit that they are using a defective image file in the manufacturing of the cd's. It would mean a recall. They should give me a working copy, a copy I paid for and am entitled to! But just because I am the first person to bring this to their attention they think its not possible that there is something wrong with the cd's......"oh we would have had thousands of complaints if there was something wrong with the cd" they say.......well wait and see.....and of course like I said above even then they may not hear about it very much because who in there right mind can stand robo phone hell and will put up with the shit to get a $69 cd (retail that is, it probably cost dell 50 cents a copy) So damm it, I just want a working copy of what I paid for that came with my system. And because they are such a huge conglomerate and there seems to be no head of the snake to cut off. There isn't even really anywhere to complain that I can find...how do you reach the top? Oh man dell is pissing me off!!!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone else has varified this problem will you please let me know. Maybe we can gang up on dell.....

Well that's, umm, 'refreshing'.

Of course by now you know this is what Dell does when you call about anything.

Since your subscription is through Norton/Symantec, you'd think their support would address it. But apparently they've taken the Microsoft pledge--"no warranty as to merchantability is expressed or implied". In other words, it does what it does and if that doesn't suit you it's your problem not ours.
