Had an inspiron 3100 - HHD was broken and exchanged
CD the same
finally some functions did not work
SUPPORT demanded reinstall
Windows installation stopped half way
Twice support engineers came and could not install windows
FOR five weeks in total nothing happened
Then I got an INSPIRON 8600 out "of generosity".
MIND There was a 3 years warranty and only a bit more than 2 years had passed.
After a year the HDD from the new one was broken, the battery made troubles , the sreen had a strande pattern in the center and now even a red, a green and a blue line goes topdown.
It has to be restarted from time to time for storage problems, though I replaced the HDD. The Sleep mode is terribly slow.
DELL says now the three years are over.
So they gave me 2 Notebook as they have not the quality that one works all the three years.
But they don't give you a good notebook for your money.
Now I have a notebook with troubles.
And Michael DELL's integrity is out.

I feel for you. I have been through a similar experience with a desktop (8300) that had numerable problems before it was two years old. After six months of Dell hell, I finally got a very nice exchange computer.

I originally had a three year warranty on the 8300. When I finally got the exchange, the warranty left was for 9 months. I purchased an additional two years. I had the option, with the 8300, to renew the warranty at the end of the third year for a fourth year, then a fifth year at the end of the fourth or a fourth and fifth year together which was cheaper. Since the warranty for the 8300 transferred to the exchange computer, I had the option to renew it for a maximum of two years. This is what you should have done. No one should buy a Dell without getting a long warranty as we all know from bitter experience that Dells are not built anymore with quality parts and the design is not that good either and we are going to need the warranties. Longer for desktop than laptop but still you probably could have renewed that warranty for a fourth year...but you have to renew BEFORE the warranty runs out.

I just kick myself that I was unwilling to believe how bad Dell had become when I purchased my 8300 in Nov 2003. I had seen a few signs but I hadn't needed tech support on my first Dell from 1999 for several years (and that support was with helping me use Windows properly as that was my first computer and not for hardware problems) so I really didn't realize how bad Dell had become. I got a very rude awakening the day my 8300 arrived. I should have backed out right then and gone elsewhere. But I was stuck back when Dell was great and thought I just got a lemon....little did I know what I was in for.
