Sony may very well have sold them, but ain't it Dell that goes on record all the time claiming how stringent their testing methods are? I take it this means excluding power supplies?
This is Dell's fault. Sony sold it to Dell, and Dell passed the nightmare onto you all in the shadow of their "claimed" stringent testing methods. |

I'm surprised that so many users bought a product that had any hardware from Sony. The XPS 600 I got as an exchange for my failed 8300 came with a Sony CD rom drive. I didn't realize it was a Sony until I put a music CD in to see if the drive was working (I didn't have auto play turned off yet) and Sony started installing DRM crap and checking my music disk. I pulled out the disk immediately and then installed Everest so I could see all the details about the hardware. It was a Sony so I removed the drive and put the Hitachi drive from my 8300 in the XPS and put the nasty Sony drive in the 8300 that went back to Dell.
Dell knew very well how I feel about Sony (and DRM in general) and I was really surprised they put a Sony CDrom drive on there knowing I would never accept it. I wouldn't buy a laptop that had Sony hardware either even if it was just a battery. I don't trust Sony at all now and I don't want anything to do with Sony.
Dell was awfully stupid to buy anything from Sony after what they did. Why would anyone ever trust Sony again? Dell probably figured they would sell those laptops to ignorant folks who have no idea what a rootkit is or what Sony did. That attitude sure doesn't make me want to buy from Dell. |

Sorry to disappoint you but it is a Sony problem. Sony has admitted to it and will shoulder the entire $225 million (or more) it will cost to replace all the batteries. This is a manufacturing problem which was corrected by Sony in February.
It is likely that all Sony batteries in ALL computers, no matter the manufacturer of the computer, will be recalled if they were manufactured before Sony changed their manufacturing process in February. HP and other OEMs have not seen the problem explode in their faces yet partly because they have not been customers of Sony nearly as long as Dell and partly because they get batteries from many sources not just Sony. The only thing Dell is guilty of is putting all its eggs in the Sony basket and not spreading its buying habits for batteries around to many manufacturers.
This does not mean I think Dell is all sweetness and light. Dell screwed me good (although I won in the end by sheer persistence but I am still screwed because of Dell's shoddy parts in this really nice computer I got after six months of Dell Hell so it will break like the 8300 and I'll be dealing with Dell yet again) and I am here because of that. But from what I have read to this date, Sony is the culprit here. I hate Sony so I feel good that Sony is getting their comeuppance. |
