Im applying for dell.. i need a job urgently Sad
need some help to make my choice...whats easier job, DOC or ACS ?
Ive worked in call centers before, and I really cant stand hammering non-stop back to back calls...Ive heard there is a division when calls are longer?
Whats DOC and whats ACS which one is what, and what will I have to do in each of them?

| Depending on the time of day, time of the year you could be doing calls back to back all day in either queue. For the most part DOC will be a little slower. At least before I left it was I don't know how things are now. You must be really desperate for a job. I don't know if your in the Nashville area but I heard on the radio Verizon was looking for people at their call center in Murfeseboro. My best advice to you would be get out of the call center business. |

Im in Canada, not USA.
Ive heard DOC gets maybe 6-10 calls a day? which is better than hammering 30-40 calls a day....
I want to get out of call centers, but I dont even know where to go, and what to do, man. |

I want to get out of call centers as well, not just Dell. So yesterday here's what I did: I sat down, listed all my strengths/interests and weaknesses, as well as goals in order to get a better perspective of where I want to go. | EDUCATION!!!!! This will get you out of Dell. Going from a tech to mgmt, auditor, or whatever else is kind of tough. Most people that have those positions hold onto them with an iron fist. They don't want to lose the chance to do very little and get paid. |

| fat chance. i got an engineering degree, as do probably half of the techs in this center. doesnt seem to help all that much...it doesnt seem to help much to advance in call centers... |

Your papers are meaningless. True story. I know of way too many people that have certification that couldn't see grass if they were stepping on it. Law of averages dictates that papers were the end result of hard studying sessions, not true ability.
I know of some that have degrees and such and all that will qualify them for is Level 1 grade anyway. Maybe Supervisor/L2 eventually. Dell, like most call centers, looks for experience, not paper. You can brag all you want about how many degrees or certs you have, and it won't mean dick to the one above you who just so happened to ace recess in school.
DOC is LUCKY to take 10 calls daily nowadays, with the change to the scope of support. 8 hours day will net maybe 6 calls. 8 if you're fast. Most calls are transfers these days. However, by summer's end, that will change and you'll be hammering the calls back to back to back. My prediction in any event. Something's looming I'm sure.
ACS is currently about 80+ deep in queue at almost any point in the day. That's up from 10-20. Can't say I know what caused the massive change, but there's something to it for sure. It doesn't just change like that for no reason.
Either way, prepare yourself for a life at L1 salary and being "missed" and "overlooked" by Management. That is, unless you're "in" with the upper crowd or are great at kissing ass. Ask anyone and they'll tell you the same, and that's that no one will get ahead based on REAL credential, just observable conformity. |

being overlooked and all is it actually the rule of thumb for every Dell's call center ? Or any call center for that matter? The center where Im starting opened just this year, and they are still going to have to hire like several hundred people...
The guy i spoke with in the interview was actually very cool....dunno about the rest of them, of course
as for papers being meaningless, some NOCs actually DO require certain certs, like CCNA, etc, and they seem to pay better. |

Basically, there are 2 things you can have going into a job. Paper and Experience. Paper shows you know how to correctly answer a question. Experience shows you can put up with crap. Some jobs want more of one than the other while most will want a particular amount of both.
I know for Dell's higher paying positions in engineering, networking and things like that, you have to have a BS and 5 years experience. Without that, forget about it. For higher skill jobs, they want to know that you know how to answer questions, but also know how to handle yourself in certain situations. Some jobs look for someone they can train to meet their mold. basically someone with either education or a little experience so they can get them in the mindset to do things their way.
Unfortunately, getting an engineering degree today is like going to the candy store to get some chocolate. Everyone's doing it, therefore the jobs are few and far between. Without experience, you don't stand a chance. d3ll, will this be your first job out of school, or have you had other jobs? I got an associates in computer electronics and engineering, and dell tech support was my first job, although, I did want to just repair computers when I got out of school and thats what I did there and am still doing at my new job.
