The subject being, CAN Dell improve?

Any company can improve. It's simply a question of desire and definition.

When a company sells out to the stockholders it's doomed. That simple.

For Dell to improve, tho, I think they need to do two simple things.

1) Quit messing with the employees and let them do their jobs.

2) Provide honest customer SERVICE.

It wouldn't hurt for management to keep in mind that without customers they'll be looking for a new place to waste their time and get paid for it, too.

Anything can happen. It then becomes a question of how likely it is to happen. In this case, 'not very'.

Turpid management breeds more turpid management, layer upon layer. Mean compensation for Dell managers is $120,000, and they produce precisely nothing. Powerpoint slideshows don't count--it has to apply to stock value, product integrity, customer satisfaction, or staff productivity, and Dell fails all those tests.

Dell's management is wholly inbred--anyone capable of thinking outside the toady 'tell me what I want to hear' box has already left. So no, Dell can't improve. They'll do what you've seen them do consistently for 6 years, defend the corner they've painted themselves into as it gets smaller and smaller.

They claim that change is on the way and to be patient because it's "won't change overnight". Really? That's funny, seeing as how their reputation went to shit seemingly overnight.

Put some elbow grease into it and hey guess what - RESULTS. Keep telling people that you're "working on it" and they're apt to just say to Hell with it, and leave just out of spite.

The apathy within their halls is stifling. The Managers are getting paid a King's ransom, so why bother ruining that? Rolling Eyes

Oh yea, the shareholders. Well, in about 3-6 months they can rest easy knowing that their precious Dell stock will come in handy as a snot rag.

This is exactly correct. The best move for Dell would be to hire a company with a proven track record to provide critical analysis of their structure and the cost/performance ratio. One that can take into account the goals as defined by the company and its' shareholders along with the (mis)management system. Unfortunately few companies exist who have what it takes to tell a company like Dell, this is EXACTLY where you've screwed up and it's going to cost you billions to straighten out. It's not terribly complicated but it would take such a report to get it across to michael and others that they've completely screwed up.

Can Dell change? The answer is Yes, but it would take a major house cleaning of ALL management layers and a return to what Dell's reputation was built on in the first place. Rocke, Fallen and Blaze make excellent points, so long as the managment teams are getting paid a king's ransom they see no reason to change the "broken" system. I predict that it would take a major shake up from the customer side of things for this to happen (and the only major thing that I can think of would be to have Dell removed from the US governments prefered provider list).

One can hope the 'Bain Boys' are reading this thread. The language is a little coarser than that of a $M consultant, but all the facts are here and right at Dell's priceline--free.

Curiously though, it was dependency upon consultants that got them in the mess they're in. Bain is such a consultant--that's where they got Rollins.

Westinghouse Electric held the original patents on the system of electric power distribution used worldwide. Today, Westinghouse exists only in a lawyer's office as a name you can license and put on anything you want. "Who Killed Westinghouse?" is a story in the 'hometown' newspaper, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. >> http://www.post-gazette.com/westinghouse/beginning.asp << One might imagine a parallel, a few years from now, in the Austin American-Statesman. Read especially chapter 6--where the CEO was a legacy of McKinsey & Co. consultants--MBAs sat around deciding which engineers to lay off--morale fell to negative numbers--Dell is following the blueprint of the last days of this industrial giant.

Can Dell improve? All of us here are intelligent enough to know that Dell can improve. The problem is that Dell management (Mike and Kev mainly) have to recognize that improvement is needed. At this point in time they dont seem to see that need. For Michael not to see the decline in his PERSONAL fortune in the last 11 months (close to 50%) makes one consider his use of intoxicating drinks or herbs. How can a man stand by and watch $8 BILLION dollars go away and not see it? Maybe if he considered running his business again instead of seeing the "Big Picture" for future Dell development, the company might see some improvement.
Now for Kevin not to see the need for change and improvement maybe be simple self preservation. If he accepts that things have gone in the shitter since he took over and tells Michael so; where does that put his BIG ideas on how to run the company while Michael thinks "BIG"? His ideas get flushed, his future gets flushed and his reputation gets flushed. (ALL THREE have been flushed on here!!) When his future is at stake, to hell with customers and employees. It is more important that he survive and find blame somewhere else and he will.
The "Yes Sir, May I kiss your ASS today?" environment that has ruled Dell the last few years is still strong and will continue to reign. No one wants to be the one to tell the Emperor his has no clothes on when he walks outside.

Core 2 can be a huge blessing, or a huge curse, to Dell, as well as the other manufacturers. This is the first chip, since I've seriously been into computers, that has bested the AMD "equivalent" However, It's another animal in and of itself, and to the best of my knowledge, Dell has no i975 mobos, of nForce 5XX boards, so they will have to do a ground-up redesign when Core 2 hits.

I think I'll defer my judgement of whether or not Dell has the motivation to pull itself up out of the quagmire of its current existence until after I see what they do with Core 2.

[BTW: Core 2 is the desktop version, Core is the mobile version]

It sucks that I have to wait till the end of the month [I like instant gratification] I want a Conroe... now now now!

anyway, I'm planning a Force 590 system with a core 2 Duo, so that I can have a Vista machine to game on.

Then, I can have a dedicated linux web/samba/mail server setup with my current machine. Good place for a Dell.

"Game Over? Core 2 Duo Knocks Out Athlon 64"

Oh and they weren't to gentle about it either. I think AMD is feeling about like a date at a Tailhook convention.

did you notice that THG had to overclock the FX-62 to even get ti to preform nearly as well as the x6700 did out of the box?

I'm very pumped for the release

BPI & SIG did as much to kill Dell as mediocre management.I witnessed the change from Customer Experience to "If I can get on the right project I can get a 2 step promotion".Most of the time they didn't change what we did just what order we did it.I remember when Dell was laughing at Gateway for selling TVs.I almost got my A-5 to ship TVs.And now their going into phones Confused Wasn't to long ago they told us there wasn't any money in selling phones. The money is in being the provider. What with portables getting cheaper and more powerful I think we've seen the end of 1of1 sales for desk tops.I believe the commerical accounts are seeing that they have options.Dell lost the TN Dept.Edu.because they wouldn't give 'em a price they could live with.[/b]
