Hey guys, I just got a 700m for college, and less than 2 months into the school year I started having sound problems with the speaker port.. I only get sound out of one side of my external altec lansing speakers, but its not the speakers that are faulty, the sound fragments even when there are no speakers attatched.. when i move the speaker wire around in the port occasionaly sound will return to both speakers.. i've tried different speakers, so its def an issue with the speaker port.. i called dell and they said they had to replace the motherboard for 400 bucks.. I don't know much about computers but that seems pretty insane to fix what I think is probably just a loose connection.. any ideas?

The Altecs do have an issue with 'one side works, the other doesn't'. Altecs work properly with another system? System cut out with other speakers? Wiggling the plug make it work, pretty much every time?

The audio jack can be resoldered to the board, but Dell doesn't do any 'repairs' just subassembly-level replacement. A local computer repair depot WOULD resolder the jack, if that's all that's wrong. And for a damsite less than $400.

The speakers aren't aligned properly and ther's a loose fitting. Indeed the soldering of the part would fix your issue.

Talk to a local tech.
