But shutting it down would only be obvious to US--the people who were already here--it wouldn't be a public PR problem for them.

I disagree with you on that one Rocke, It would be BIG news if this site were shut down by Dell. The PR would be horrendous. and could even violate labor laws as this site can be considered to be a Union meeting under strict interpretation of the law. The PR would be as big as the HP pre-texting scandal. And why bother, a new site would just pop back up under a slightly different name. But then again, the laws, and PR don't seem to be a big consideration for Dell.... The situation with the silent owner seems fishy, very fishy to me....

Does it? Think about the impact of Enron. The owner of this site could be targeted by Dell and to who knows what end?
Posting on this site is playing with big incomes and large investments. These are the types of people who would take a contract out on their mother and that is no exaggeration.
We all read this stuff and we think how terrible and it then it becomes routine.
I don't think it has impacted fully as to how desperate the Dell management is.
Folks should be cautious posting on this site.
Take precautions.
But for the sake of God post and post often.
Keep the press people informed as they are the lifeline to this site.
Sine the layoffs, the outcome of the SEC investigation and the NY class action there are a number of press people perusing this site on a regular basis.
They are not large in numbers but they are a solid connection to millions of people.
So this may be a good time to review things to the readers and repost some of the more relevant posts with updated comments added.
Be sure and report any threats or harrasment from Dell or any other entity in regard to this site.
If you get threatened then contact your local police and FBI and DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT!

I am going to have to disagree with paul and other people that believe that D(h)ell has purchased this site. It has been shown repeatedly that when D(h)ell has found out the real names of people that post on this site, the posters were terminated for either a "code of conduct" violation or some other "legitimate" reason. If D(h)ell really did buy this site from Tom, then they would have control of the user database. This database may not list our public names, but it does list valid email addresses that can be traced back to our public names. If D(h)ell had this information, then me and several other D(h)ell insiders would have been terminated not long after the site was sold by Tom. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how the day went), I am still employed by D(h)ell.

It's pretty easy to conspiratorily theorize. But what Apathy says is inescapable. Dell goes to great lengths to fire anyone they catch associated here. The owner has access to everyone's real identity. If Dell owned the site even remotely, nobody here would still be employed by Dell.

Good point Apathy,

However I still don't understand something...Tom told us the offer was good, that good he couldn't decline it. So why would someone purchase this site to ruin it Question

Why would someone buy something that honestly doesn't give a sh*t about...why would someone spend money not to earn more money Question Cause this site could perfectly be profitable, but the way it is managed it is not.

It looks like the buyer wanted it for its traffic, but it is a very low priority for him in terms of growth or support. The traffic is still here, even though the content is lagging. The proof is the number of people who click on spam even though it is obvious that it's spam. Some people will click anything and I think that is what a great deal of net commerce relies upon. It is not possible to make logical sense of that.

Hey just thought I would check in on my old friends. I noticed someone said I sold the site to dell and that is 100% not true.
The person who bought the site was from a forum i frequent for buying and selling domain names and sites with traffic to generate revenue.
As you know, I never had advertisements on this forum and when i did, it was short lived!
I regret selling the site, but was paying for it out of pocket without any revenue from the site. I can assure you that the party i sold it to was not Dell, but I do not know if it has been sold since then, but doubt it.

Either way, i just popped in to say hello.

Hi, moT. Long time. What do you suppose this site would be worth, if say one of the mods hypothetically wanted to buy it?

Actually it would be up to the owner of it. I don't know what kind of traffic it is getting or anything like that. It seems to be pretty popular still, but again I have no idea.

It needs some major changes and needs to be put back on a faster server for sure. This is my first visit in over a year.

I look about hourly, typical visitor count is 20-30. Dell has terrorized all but the boldest of employess from posting, except the layoff folks. We hear from a customer ~every other day.

The ad traffic is said to be lagging, though some effort is going in that direction.

The server went to a congested one 3 weeks ago, before that it was mostly instant and the change was readily apparent.

Just estimate, 3 or 4 figures?

Hey Tom,

That guy who talked about selling the site to Dell would be me. I guess I deserve some respect, especially after the time I dedicated to this site and my intention to help.

I am sorry for that line, I was too angry, too upset, too sad to see this site falling apart. Apathy showed me another point of view and I agree with him.

I remember the good days with Scoop, Blaze, Grissom and Badger among others, miss you guys so bad, we sure had some fun time.

Nice to see you back here, nice to hear from you, keep in touch although I'm almost outside...

Tom,

Have you noticed your signature Question
Mods and top 10 posters had their signatures changed, they have a URL, guess who put it there...

I looked up the domain name registration and this site is not owned by Dell as far as I know. The information for the owner of the website can be found by going to the link below.

I used to come every day then I was sick earlier this month and I hadn't been here in about 2-3 weeks. I thought the site was gone when I tried to load it a few minutes ago. It took so long to load that I thought Dell had somehow bought it and killed it. Then when it finally loaded, it took forever to get to this thread. I've been on the computer for many hours (fell yesterday and ache all over so today have been sitting all day) and my broadband connection is fine so I knew it was just this site...then I saw your comment.

Damn. It would be great if a mod could buy this site. It's going to die a slow, painful death if left on this slow server. Why was that done? Current owner doesn't care?
