the problem can be a lot of things!!! Unfortunately all the answers aren't always right on top of all the tech's head. I wish people would always understand that when I worked there. So possible causes could be: video driver issues, video card problems(connection, over heating, etc..), lcd issues, or just some other random OS issue or hardware issue. So like paul said contact tech support or look up the issue on google or find a forum out there.

Insufficient data to define the problem. I'd guess along the lines of the backlight driver (hardware). If that's it, it should get worse over time. It may HAVE to get worse before it can be fixed. If it only does it once an hour, a tech is (likely) going to turn it on, see a display, decide it's not broken and send it back to you.

Wow, thanks for thinking of me Paul Embarassed

Alright, the probable causes have been mentioned. Here are link to the drivers for your system:

ATI video card: http://ftp.us.dell.com/video/R106547.EXE

Nvidia video card: http://ftp.us.dell.com/video/R111573.EXE

If you are unsure of your vid card, right click my computer, click properties, click hardware, device manager, then click the plus sign next to display adaptors. It will either say ati or radeon for the ati driver or it will say nvidia or geforce for the nvidia driver.

To install the driver, just click the correct link, click save, save it to the desktop and open the file once it's downloaded and follow the onscreen instructions.

If this doesn't fix your issue, connect the system to an external monitor to see if it does the same thing on the external monitor. If it does flicker, then there is an issue with the video card, otherwise, it's an issue with the portable lcd display. A possible resolution could be to just reseat the video signal cable underneat the hinge cover (the plastic part above the keyboard). To remove the hinge cover, check here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9300/sm/sullivat.htm#wp1123881 and to reseat the monitor cable, see here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9300/sm/sullivaz.htm#wp1022270 On the 3rd picture down, the display cable is marked by the number "1".

If none of these resolve your issue, reinstall your OS, by backing up all your important data, shut down the system and unplug ALL external devices including your internet connection and printer. Turn the computer on and at the Dell logo screen, press ctrl+f11. You should get a pc restore screen, click restore, then confirm. ***Important Notice*** Doing this takes you back to original factory configuration and you will lose any and all unsaved data.

If still not resolved, time to call tech support and get either your lcd replaced or your video card replaced depending on the step mentioned early about trying the external monitor. Any further questions, please send me a PM and I will be more likely to respond. Thanks

Now that's a DAMN comprehensive response Exclamation

End users: Tech Support is not ALWAYS stiffarming you, sometimes the issues ARE that complicated.

Yeah, I guess I will provide as much info as I can for as little detail as was provided. I didn't get picked to be one of the first Gold technicians in Nashville for sucking, well, if I really cared as much about the people I talk to while at work as I do while I'm on this site, I might get a promotion. Oh well, I could never be a dell liar, i mean, manager.

About the second part, you are gosh darn right some issues are complicating. If you are going to call in an issue that is intermittent, please, document every time it happens, what you were doing or trying to do, were any other applications running, have you run your spyware and antivirus software lately. Why do people think norton and mcafee are sufficient for spyware, nevermind that, too complicating of a response.

Intermittent issues are always the worst, cause even if you do call tech support and think you can replicate it, 99% of the time, you can't. that's why documentation is important.

Note to self: write down what I just said.

Just wondering how your issue is doing. Please keep us informed or beware the wrath of trying to get cheap support in the future. I don't know what it is, but beware.

Man, can Monday Night Football take any longer to get here. I'm so bored.

Nis, i'm not sure what faulkstoned is, but thanks, lol.
