We prefer to never deal with Dell directly and buy all our servers via trusted resellers. VARs provide us with a great service and their prices are pretty much the same we would get from Dell if bought directly.

There is one problem though - Dell shuts down resellers at whim. We lost one reseller that way a while ago and now another one says Dell does not sell them servers anymore. They showed us a terse letter they received from Dell which does not explain anything. Dell Reseller Escalations say that reseller violated agreement providing no details and their account is suspended. Reseller says they were unable to get more information from Dell Reseller Escalations which matches what our previous reseller told us. Reseller Escalation decision seems to be final and it looks like they are more interested in shutting down the account than explaining/preventing the problem.

We are too invested in Dell's hardware at this point to switch and will have to find some other reseller. It takes a while to establish relationship with a decent supplier, and Dell Direct does not fit this category. We liked our original one - they still sell us a lot of other stuff, only Dell makes this so hard.

Any comments from inside? Reseller escalations?

I've heard of people being banned for selling their own 4 year old non-warranty Dell laptop on ebay. The reseller escalations group is brutal.

You may be better of by contacting Better Business Bureau or your local small claims court if you believe you have a strong case.

On a wider subject, I wonder if Dell's attitude toward resellers is justified from a legal standpoint. What they do smells like price fixing, unfair competition and so forth.
