Most people get junk in the mail and trash it.
Some people unsubscribe to the junk.
And a few people chase after the marketers until they find out how they got their information.
In the past, Dell used to use the junk mail list broker Acxoim.
see: http://www.ecofuture.org/jmdell.html
Currently, Dell gets its mailing lists from Data Solutions, a part of Merkle Inc.
Merkle's Privacy Policy says that they are active members of the DMA. Yet its been known that people who have used the DMA Choice website to opt-out still receive Dell catalogs.
The policy also states:
"Merkle obtains marketing infomation from and through our clients and also acquires such marketing information from third parties to be used by our clients from third parties."
see: http://www.merkleinc.com/wmspage.cfm?parm1=284
Does Merkle, an "active member" of the DMA, disregard the DMA opt-out screening lists? It seems that Dell and/or Merkle might be using somewhat less than legitimate means to harvest mailing lists.
Can anyone shed some light on this gray area? |
