Ok, this is my first post, and I will try to make it as short as possible. Here goes:
I run a small nonprofit org. We have only been in operation for a couple of months, so we do not have that much business credit built yet. So when we decided to finance a laptop, we chose Dell as it seems as though ANYONE can get financing with them.
Well, we ordered the notebook online and were pleasantly surprised when the decision came back that we qualified for Dell Business Credit. We completed the order by "customizing" the notebook and choosing our shipping method.
The order was placed and their site claimed it would ship in 4 days or so.
I was pretty confused when I got a call from some really nervous sounding guy at DFS to gather information about my company (information that I provided online when the order for the notebook was placed). I answered all of his questions and he sounded like he was getting more and more nervous and like he was about to pee himself.
Anyhow, a couple of hours later I decided to check the status of the order. The shipping date had been pushed back by 10 days. I called 'customer care' to ask why, and I was told that it was due to them adding a DVD burner upgrade. I told them that I did not want the upgrade if it was going to delay the shipping, but I got a response that was pretty much: "Hey, buddy. Dell's being real nice by giving you this, so you better take it!" (Note: That was sarcasm there.)
Then, at the end of the day I decided to check the order again. This time it said it was cancelled. So I took advantage of calling the "customer care case manager' who provided his extension to see what the heck was going on.
4 days later I get an email from him apologizing for not getting back to me and for all that had happened, but if I were to reorder he would make sure that the financing went through and he would even upgrade the shipping to next day at no charge. Wow.
So I reordered (like a dummy). Did it go through? Hmmmm... would I be here if it did? So I called the 'customer care' center again and got this for an answer from a sales rep that was added to the line to explain what happened (because I guess the sales people do the customer service jobs and the customer service people do something else): "I'm sorry for what happened, but DFS could not offer your company any financing. You can pay by credit card." When asked about the promise that the original case manager made: "He must not have been looking at your account properly. Anyone who actually looked at these numbers could tell you that there is no possible way for us to finance your company."
So here's my complaints:
#1: NEVER EVER EVER make a promise to a customer that you can not keep. I was promised a service that I did not get.
#2: NEVER EVER EVER make the customer feel inferior. "Anyone who looked at these numbers could tell you that there is no possible way for us to finance your company." Sure, my company is only a couple of months old. But we have NO outstanding debt. But the way this guy put it makes it seem like we are a bunch of deadbeats or crooks.
#3: NEVER EVER EVER make a consumer feel as though his business is not worth the effort it takes to talk to him on the phone. It seems as though Dell loves to do that.
Well, there it is. I left some stuff out to make it shorter (hey, it coulda been longer! lol), but that's the gist of it.
Oh, and I did send an email to Michael Dell with cc's to Kevin Rollins and all of the 'customer care managers' who 'helped' me along the way. Not that Michael will ever see it....

I don't know about anyone else, but I find this one very strange, since Dell makes most of its profits out of business relationships. If I were you Merc, just for kicks I would see if they'd approve you as an individual. But my recommendation is never ever buy a PC through DFS. The interest rate is just not worth it.
