The hard drive for my Inspirion E1705 is working, however the system is not. I have important documents that I need to retrieve before I toss it. How do I go about transferring the contents of the hard drive on the non working laptop to my working desktop?
I read an old post with a similar problem and a poster suggested an external house... Can someone provide me a link where I may purchase one so I can get an idea what I need and the measurements required for my particular hard drive (Inspirion E1705/9400)?? Thanks in advance.
HERE IS THE OLD POST

What you want to do is buy an external house for a 3.5" hdd. They should be about 20 bucks, and it has a usb cord. You pull the hdd from your system, put it in the external house, and then you can just drag and drop your info onto any other computer.
Of course, that's all on the contigency that your hdd is still intact, but, luckily for us bearers of the dell, the hdd is never really fried, just the mother board, processor, etc. |

I last worked in desktop, so I have never seen the exact USB housing for the 3.5 drive.
If it is mounted in a carrier (plastic) inside the Inspiron you will probably have to remove that, generally 2 or 4 small screws. Handle the raw drive very carefully, they are fragile when unmounted. Portable harddrives are all the same size so there will be only one size of housing to fit it.
Google '3.5" drive USB external housing', or go to a computer supply store like Fry's or a neighborhood computer store.
Anyone with more specific details? Speak up. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

Actually, a laptop drive is 2.5", not 3.5". 2.5" drives are fairly universal throughout laptop,s except for some of th enewer ones, whcih have 1.8". Yours has a 2.5" drive, specifically a 2.5" SATA drive.
This is the device you need (or something similar):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817348022
What you want to look for is that it specifically fits 2.5" SATA drives with a USB 2.0 plug. |

Yeh 3.5 sounded a little aggressive. They're smaller than a floppy. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist
