|
|
| I am computer unknowlegable. I recently had a hard drive replace by dell under warranty. The repair man said I should probably add memory. So a couple months later I start pricing it and trying to figure out how I'll get someone to put it in. People tell me how to check and see what I have. The computer says 256mb ram but my invoice says supposed to be 512.. So I call Dell and they remotely confirm I have only 256mb. They tell me to open the case and look in. I do and find only 1 memory card. No one has ever been inside except their repairman. so either I never got the correct memory from the factory or he failed to put it back in. Dell tells me if a part is missing they won't do anything only if a part is bad. computer is still under warranty. I guess they expect you're qualified to open your computer on purchase and check all the components and check over all the work any repair person does. The SOLUTION ; NEVER BUY A DELL |

I understand your frustration but you have think about a little.
People have 21 days from invoice date to check that everything's fine. After that, Dell simply can't take responsability over it. What if people start calling for missing ram sticks that they really are not missing, they removed it so they can ask for another one.
However, I believe you. And you'll have to get someone on the phone that believes you too. It's just a 256 memory stick (rare, because if you buy 512 usually you are sent 1 512 stick, not 2 256)

Well not sure if this belongs here or not. I will post it anyway. A friend of mine just bought an Inspirion 9400. I put in the service tag on Dell's website. It showed it came with 1 GB ram. Guess what? He has 2 GB ram installed. How in the world did this happen? Sorry you got 256 when you were sussposed to get 512. 512 MB is just about standard now right? I guess with Vista it is. _________________

I thought Dell changed it to 30 days? Did I just dream that? (Wishful thinking)?
Why would it be rare for skinflint Dell to send two 256 sticks? They are cheaper than one 512. Dell promised me two 1GB sticks and then sent 4 512 ones so I have no empty slots and I was planning to add more RAM eventually. It was cheaper to send 4 512 instead 2 1GB. |

Keep in mind that that is also an easy way to boost performance. two sticks instead of one allows slightly higher bandwidth, reducing transfer time for the memory. _________________ "The art of Engineering is knowing what you can safely ignore." -Dr. H. Hess

Could be, I'm not up to date with Dell's policies & proceedures.

True, I got it the other way around, my bad. _________________ I see DELL people!!

OP - if this repair man wasn't part of Dell's 3rd party at home service, then yes, you're screwed. Not Dell's responsibility if the customer chooses to hire non-Dell related techs and something goes missing or wrong.
However, if it was a Dell repair man as part of the 3rd party at home service, and RAM went missing, you *may* have recourse to have it replaced. They can call the vendor and double check with the tech that was dispatched for that call. Maybe they just forgot to put it back. It happens, though not very often.
As long as you have receipts, you can still debate the issue if Dell pushes back. Again, this is only if it was a Dell vendor rep that was the repair man. Otherwise you may be looking at replacing the RAM out of pocket. |
