We bought a Dell Inspiron for my son for graduation in July. This is now September. The computer has NEVER worked. Push the power button, a green on light comes on and that is it. Nothing on the monitor, no harddrive sounds, no beeps, absolutly nothing. We've gone round and round with support. They tell us the same thing, take out the battery, try it without the power cord, and so forth. They've even sent a tech out to replace the motherboard and it still doesn't work. He said it needs to be replaced. Guess What!! Tech support says we're outside of the 21 day customer satisfaction peroid, so it can't be replaced. It's their fault we're outside the 21 day period. They keep putting us off!
Dell's timing is perfect. Now that I have a $1000 paperweight for my son to start school, I have no choice but to buy another laptop (Gateway this time). I work in network services for a school district and we are discussing what to do about replacing several hundred computers in the school district. You can guess where my recommendation will go. I will also share this information with EVERY school district in the state of Washington.
Besides venting, I'm also hoping someone has an idea for me.
PS I laughed when I saw all the results of googling "Dell Sucks". |

Dell has records about you calling in before the 21 day period expired, so if you can get hold of a Supervisor then you should have your replacement.
It's not an easy thing though...I know it's hard (and I'm not saying you did it) but if you can treat the Techs in a polite and respectful manner, it will be easier for you to get your problem resolved.
Techs: RTD warranty doesn't apply here How's that she got an on site tech _________________ I see DELL people!!

Actually with laptops you have the choice between RTD (that's return-to-depot for n00bs) or NDB (next-business-day at-home service). A 1 year tech + 1 year RTD is what comes standard. Anything else is extra.
Question for people in service plan sales: Can you extend your laptop warranty to an aditional year or years BEFORE the old one expires? _________________ Don't be lazy, build your own computer... |

Laura: You do need it replaced. Hound the managers since this problem was first discussed within the 21 days satisfaction period. If worse comes to worse, you'll have to try to contact somebody in the Dell Corporate offices about the replacement.
If the power light is coming on, but there's no hard drive activity and nothing on the screen, it does sound like the motherboard or the CPU, or perhaps even the power rectifier. You may have some loose solder points. Either way, it's going to be more of a headache to get it fixed than anything. _________________ I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight for your right to say it.
