hello, fellow Dell haters! I'm new and figured I'd open up with my random vent about my Inspiron (AKA future paperweight)

Shall I list the issues?

General Background:
14.1 Dell Inspiron 5100
16mb ATI Radeon Mobility
256mb RAM
24x CD-RW/DVD-ROM

My Hardware Issue List (past & present):

past issue (mildly still present):
- constantly overheats and lags out the video card because of horrible ventilation design. i managed to fix this myself after scouring Dell's absolutely useless tech forums. the thing used to overheat and shut down all the time. still overheats but doesnt shut down....mainly because i blow it off before it can do so. Rolling Eyes

past issue:
- hard drive has permanent errors on it somewhere and i've had approximately 2-3 crashes so far, all of which resulted in irrecoverable data! RAD! you know the end is nigh when you hear that infamous clicking sound. BSOD LAND HERE I COME!

current issue:
- so ive had this laptop approximately 3 years and the LCD monitor's backlight is going bad. is that the normal lifetime for these bulbs or is it dependent upon the amount of use? i'm sure Dell cut corners and used cheaper parts somewhere. my screen now has the infamous pink hue, flickering and recently has the ABSOLUTELY SPLENDID blackout-at-any-time syndrome! it's awesome, especially when im in the middle of a game and everything goes dim.

honestly, the ONLY thing holding me back from creating a thread in the section where people destroy Dells, is the fact that i still owe some money on this god forsaken thing Sad

BTW, does anyone here know what's involved with the installation of a new CCFL bulb? it looks like its going to be fucking dandy. it looks to be the cheapest route, seeing as my warranty is beyond gone. i apologize if this is a bad first post here but i'm fairly frustrated.

and i'm posting from a 1999 Macintosh G3 B&W that i severely overclocked and turned into a sexy beast. Twisted Evil

OH YEAH, i forgot about the customer service issue. OUTSOURCING. omg, i hate it. one time when i called Dell customer support, i had to read my DPA number....6 TIMES before the lady repeated it back to me correctly.

(Oh ok now i get why dell f**ked you) Ok yes dell did cut corners with the bulb(Like with everything), If you still owe money for your laptop call dell and say that i'm not going to pay cause you gave me a piece of shit! Threaten them like that and they should be able to fix the light bulb issue and finally if you pissed off call the BBB they will eventually get sick of all these complaints and do an investigation.

The fluorescent in laptops is very similar to fluorescents in your office--they do age (according to operating hours) and they do dim. Run this by a local repair shop and see if they can replace the lamp.
