I'm glad I found this site because I am really at my wit's end here and I'm not sure what I can do next. Here is my situation. I bought an Inspiron 1150 last april and got the 1 year warranty. My warantee ran out on 4/20. The laptop worked fine until 3 days ago. Now when I try to power on the the laptop the power and battery light flash on and the automatically go right out. Then the power light blinks for a minute or two before finally going out. I emailed tech support at Dell and they gave me a list of things to try to get it working again, including taking out the memory, cd rom, and hard drive. But nothing seems to work. So I called Dell today and they basically told me "tough luck". Since my warranty ended last month there is nothing they can do. Of course, I can buy another Dell!!!

Is this usually how Dell equipment works? Do they always just stop working once the warranty runs out? Has anyone had any luck complaining until Dell agreed to do something? I'm looking for any advice of what I can try to do to get this rectified.

Sounds like it could be a loose dc jack and the battery is not charging. If that's the case, you can have it repaired.
If you want/need more info on fixing it, shoot me an email.

I had my motherboard and ram replace only after six months. Last week I had the sam problem as you, I would press the power button but the computer tried to start and died. It is out of warrantee and I sent back to dell. $600 later, it's fixed. Piece of crap, two motherboards in one year?

Have the dc jack soldered back on it. Why buy an entire mobo everytime?!

Soldering tip. You might want to tell him to use rosin core solder too! Obviously this guy is not asking how to solder connections on his motherboard and a good pinpoint would cost about as much as the motherboard and if he doesn't use rosin core solder he will ruin the board. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I had a friend who decided to open up one of his mono block amps and he unplugged a wire and had a choice of 2 places to plug it back in. He did an eeny meeny miney moe and plugged it in and hit on and blew one of his capaciters. End result $500 damage to unit. If you're going to tell him how to fix it then give him the schematic or the web page link to same and though you may be very savvy with an oscilloscope, not all users have reached that ultimate plateau yet - hence the user is asking for your expertise and you are leaving out the meat and potatos. N'est pas? Cool

The vast majority of the components are surface mount. To put it bluntly you are not going to find surface mount soldering equipment at the local Radio Shack. I have decades of experience in soldering. I am a graduate of the Air Force High Reliablity Soldering school. I would never consider trying to solder on a system board with out the right equipment, and due to the cost of the tools (There is a comma in the price) it is not worth his time or money to try and do his own soldering.

I wasn't implying that he solder it! There are several place it can be taken to to have it done. I do at least 2-3 of these a week.

soldering...somedays I wonder about you all. lets see. its a 1 year old laptop. its an 1150. its getting power but not posting...what could it be...hmmmmm can we spell probably overheated due to a plugged heatsink. (known issue with the 1100,1150,5100,5150 as they share the same chassis design) fastest way to find out. question: after 5 minutes of running (before it died) did the fan kick into high speed and never slow back down? if yes. youve got a cooked processor. replace the processor, clean the heatsink and keep it clean and your probably good to go. odds are the mobo is fine. (not gonna guarantee that though) downside, replacing the cpu is expensive. better off sinking the money into a new laptop and learning how to maintain it via regular cleaning of the cooling system.

I bought my son a new Inspiron 1150 for beginning high school. The motherboard went out at ONE WEEK past the 90 day warranty. The Inidan tech guy basically said it was out of warranty. In other words, what he is saying is that you can spend $800 on a product and if it craps out in a little over three months, you are welcome to buy another one.
Right.

hey it sucks, but its your own fault. consumer electronics have a fairly high failure rate. always max out the warranty. the day your warranty runs out..its out. period. the manufacturer is no longer liable, unless you called in about the issue prior to warranty expiration. the lower end systems are now comping with a 90 day warranty. (note to the wise, if it only has a 90 day warranty doesn,t matter what it is, theres usually a reason for it. that reason is that it has a fairly high first year fail rate, otherwise, it would have a standard 1 year warranty. cutting the warranty to 90 days is a money saving tactic used by companies) the 1100 and 5100 are very popular with college kids due to the price point. its a laptop means small means fits well in a dorm, and its cheap. College kids typically leave it running 24/7 (that model just can't handle it well) and dorms are a very dusty environment, so the heatsinks plug up, dead laptop in 90 days. this past year I have been on a campus 3 out of 5 days with a mobo for an 1100 or 5100 series. Its been a plugged heatsink every time and a dead cpu. (sometimes the mobo too)fix it, terach the kids to only run it when its needed and how to clean it..and good to go...heck one day...i did 3 on the same campus...different buildings.

Don't you have the initial one year warranty, which is compulsive Question

If you do, the motherboard is not covered under it Question

Techs, can you give me more details please Question

1150 only comes with a 90 day parts warranty now. take a look at any dell catalog to see what the current warranties are. the low end systems that have high fail rates withing the first year have all been converted to 90 day warranties. Typically, mobo, CPU overheats, among other problems don't show up intil about month 5 or 6. so its out of warranty. Dell saves money.
