|
|
My Inspirion 518 or the chassis fan that sticks on the wall of the tower is busted. DELL internet support is trying to rip me off by asking me to buy a replacement. Even though my warranty is obviously there on the warranty status of DELL's own website, the stupid Indian guy is still trying to rip me off..
I don't know why but there aren't many Inspirion 518 confirmations of the fan size case fan. The original one is busted and made by a company called FoxConn.
So for the Inspirion 518, can anyone tell me the actual fan size of the chassis fan? The Indian guy from the Internet techincal support stated 120 mm but he couldn't be anymore wrong. |

| It's either 120mm, 92mm, or 80mm... those are the three standard sizes. Looking at the pics, i'd say 92 or 80mm. |

I'm confused. This is what you told the agent: | Quote: | | 06/11/2009 07:27:03PM User: "the original case fan is still working, everything's ok" | You didn't ask for a replacement under warranty, you asked for the spec to buy another one aftermarket.
Dell phone answerers don't have access to specs. Odds are they've never seen the inside of a computer. They only 'know' what their script tells them from the keyword they type in based on what you say. If the script comes up empty ("file not found") they just bullshit, trying not to sound stupid. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

| I went to this forum first before asking for the correct fan size, I had to lie about it just to prevent the dude from asking me to suggest buying the correct part from DELL's factory. I ain't doing that. It's fair cause DELL reps lie when they don't know anything at all |

Ahh yes. And note he tried to steer you there anyway. Then gave you either madeup or downright faulty data. Yep, that's Dell alright. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

YOu may end up buying the piece of crap from Dhell anyway. Dell fans are , like alot of things, proprietary. The fan size will be right and the fan will spin and cool, but aftermarket fans are missing the third wire that monitors the fan speed. The result is the machine will halt on post every time, with a fan error message until you press a key. No, there isnt a way to disable this feature in the bios so you'll end up either pressing a key mid boot every time, or replacing it with an original one.

Go to your local computer reseller/repair shop. I had to get a fan for my roomates XPS desktop. Cost me a whopping 4 bucks for another. Be sure you bring in the old one to match it up. _________________ Former employee of Dell and can say that they

Dell fans are off-the-shelf items. There are 2 peculiarities. One, the connector isn't what everyone else uses. Two, the fans are feature-specific.
Any fan with matching features and connector can be used. _________________ Rocke T Sinetist

I don't really want to buy a fan from DELL, in any case the fan that they originally built on the computer was half a volt and .61 CFM literally, which means that thing couldn't even blow a paper away even at close range. I've experimented on this btw...
I bought the fan from website Newegg. It's a whole lot better. And you're right about DELL fans. They use the fans which is out of stock. I've tried looking into the manufacturer's website and it seems they don't want to acknowledge they built chassis fans.
You should try see what price they charged for that POS fan. $18 dollars + the hidden fee of shipping/handling. I ain't buying for that.
The fan I bought only cost me $25. I say it was well worth the price =P...
Temperature wise:
DELL's fan kept my case at 86 C, which is too high
The Antec fan that I bought now keeps my case at 50 C...
50 C .... 86 C
That's a HUGE difference. DELL, you fail!!!! |
