As any reader here can imagine, I am so fed up with this so called sales job, you're nothing more than a glorified CSR, they overload you with account management it leaves you no time to sell. So after 16 months of slaving away at this thankless job, I am so ready to leave. Great news is I've already got another tech sales job lined up, and plan to give Dell my two week notice after this quarter ends.
My question is, should I tell them that I have a job with a competitor, or will they threaten me somehow with the non-compete agreement I signed when hired? I've heard it's best to just say that you are quitting because you need to find a job where you can make more $. Thing is, I'd rather tell them the truth and have them "walk" me, so I don't have to work the next two weeks after giving notice.
Don't want to burn the bridge, you never know, I may need a job here again in the future...

Personally I would just tell them that you are quitting and leave it at that. It really is none of their business where you are planning on going after you walk out that door, and Dell would have a VERY hard time even if they did know to enforce that non-compete document, especially in light of the impending lawsuits and trials that will be going on regarding falsification of financial records for the SEC and the class action suit from the State of New York.
DO yourself a favor and just tell them you are quitting and leave it at that. If they ask why in an exit interview, just tell them what you think of their business practices if you want, or just tell them that it is none of their damned business. Either way, there is no reason other than your own ego to tell them you are going to a competitor. Dell doesn't care, sales agents like techs are a dime a dozen... less than that actually. |

What I recommend is that you approach whoever in your area is your director or VP and let them know you would like to volunteer to be on any upcoming RIF. Skip your manager since he will know nothing about any of that kind of stuff going on. The exec may see it as a wonderful opportunity to help meet their numbers and one less llife destroyed. It may turn out you can get a severance package, and unemployment. Otherwise, you get zip. It's worth a try if you are going anyway. . Let them know you have another job in the works, and they pay 10% more. (or whatever). Another remote possibility is that they will counter with a better offer
Upon departure from any company, if you do not receive anything in exchange, then there is no reason to sign anything upon leaving. Most likely nobody cares where you are going, or why, so just keep it to yourself. Stay professional, and maybe your manager will check the box that says that you can be hired again. Most of all, remember, it is just a job. What goes on there is only important to the people there. |

You are both right, I could give them a simple, irrefutable reason such as looking to make more $, family issues, or a less friendly, but equally effective "because I want to" response. Problem is, my new job wants me to start ASAP, so am actually hoping that management will actually ask me to leave immediately, rather than have me stay the two weeks of my notice. I understand that they will walk you when you say that you are going to work at competitor, but will still consider you rehireable, although I agree it is not best to let them know.
BTW, the only reason I'm waiting till beginning of Q4 to give notice is that I will be blending above quota in Q3, so I want to make sure they pay me my 4X kicker. Does anyone know if they can deny me this if I quit in first week of Q4? I don't trust them to pay me if I gave my notice in weeks 12 or 13. I've heard that you have to be employed at the time of payout to get bonuses and spiffs, but I'm not concerned about those.
Also, I don't agree that we are easy to replace, at least not in the relationship sales space. ISR's are already spread very thin there, and though they can easily bring someone in to take my place, it will be a good while before they ramp up to my level of knowledge. I know, it took me many months to get to know all the tools and procedures that this job requires, but then I came from outside of Dell.
Regardless, that's what's one of the many things wrong with this company, as well as almost all of corporate America today, they consider employees as expendable rather then their greatest resource. |

If you recall when you signed your paperwork for the job, Dell can let you go without notice or reason, and vice versa. You appear to have fallen into the very mindset that so many abused people do, that you are the blame or you fear that you have done wrong, you owe them only a two week notice and that is more than they desreve. _________________ Working for Gateway Now! |

I'm afraid you read me wrong, in no way do I feel like it's my fault or I've done something wrong. I'm simply trying to figure out the best exit strategy given my situation.
Seems like the best course of action is to give the a 2 wk notice right after the new quarter begins, give no specific reason for leaving and just hope that they'll walk me anyways. I figure I'll be entitled to all commissions earned in the previous quarter, including the kicker. I just hope that they will pay me all that I'm due.
Thanks for the advice, I'll soon be on the other side of the fence, where I am 100% certain the grass is much greener. |

-- Do that, but expect to be walked before the day is over. If you haven't started doing so yet, start RIGHT NOW taking home your personal items from your cube. Take some out to your car at lunchtime, take an armload out when you go home. Take EVERYTHING BEFORE you give your notice!

-- Do that because you don't want to say anything on the record that can be held against you in the future, like when a potential employer checks your background. Even though Dell HR is supposed to say nothing more than your dates of employment and last salary, they can look at your exit interview comments and hold them against you - and you'll never know what they're saying about you.

-- Be prepared to fight them on this; you may need legal representation based upon what others have posted here in recent months. We wish you luck. |

| I actually work for a competitor of Dell, and I also signed an agreement when I was hired, saying that I wouldn't go to a competitor for a full year after I was done here. When people want to quit here and be walked out right way, we just say that we would rather not disclose where we are going. Then they just assume that we are going to Dell, or CDW, and they walk us right out. We do get to collect the crap on our desks though.... |
