LCD's are easy. Tell them it only gives a ghost image that is unreadable. Classic backlight has gone out.If you go the pixel route you'll end up counting them for them, and the scripts are very picky about what is acceptable.

The back cover...Scratches only works if you have complete care. Tell them the hinges have been getting very loose and the bottom of the cover cracked while opening the screen to use.

0f00:0142 error code for hard drive.

Motherboard: tell em it's not booting at all.
Keyboard: Tell them a keycap fell off and wont go back in place. Happens all the time

Cdrom: Tell them it wont open the tray anymore, and your best Led Zeppelin Cd is stuck inside. If it's a desktop they will ask you to put a paperclip in the release hole.

Video card: for desktops, simply tell them you see strange characters all over the screen, even in the bios. You cant run PSa beccause there's too many of them and you cant see the screen.

Printer: Tell em it wont detect anymore on any system, and that the cable has already been replaced.

Memory: Tell them the only way the system will start is if one of the ram modules is taken out. If the same ram is put in the other slot, it also fails.

Heatsink/Fan: Tell them the system overheats and shuts down after about 15 minutes. There isnt a call center guy int he world going to wait that long for it to happen.

Power Supply:For laptops, say the green light wont come on. For Desktops say the power light flashes amber and wont boot, will sometimes boot if you pull the plug and hold the power button down but shuts off midway through the boot process.

Rubber feet/ LCD buttons. If you have completecare, just say they are missing. If not say you have them, but the glue wont stick tot he pc anymore.

Docking stations: Tell them you get no video or the usb port wont work at all.Docks are near imposile to diagnose.

For complete system Exchange: Tell them it's overheating to the point the OS microsoft label is now moulten goo......and that you smell a really funny "ozone odour".

did I miss anything?

Will this work for laptops? Do they not just test it when you send it in? Mine is going in on Monday because the AC adapter is loose (Inspiron 1525), and i'd love to get a newer cd-rom (maybe with label support, like most 1525's come with now) Do i just complain in the letter i intend to add, or will they just check it and say tough luck.

Also, the bios reports the battery is near the end of it's usuable life, any chance they'll replace that too, or is there another magic "test" i can use to get it replaced?

thanks in advance

batteries only have a one year warranty.

If you take it out look at the serial number:

xx-xxxxxx-xxxxx-xxx-xxxx post what is in the xxx spot and i'll tell you if it's in warranty.

If it is you can tell them that you're getting a message in windows saying that the battery has reached the end of it's life, and that if you unplug the system it doesn't stay on for more then a minute.

A CDROM drive in teh 1525 is a CRU. It can be replaced by you. Even if you have return to depot, which I assume you do as you're sending it in, they can send you the drive to install it yourself

I'll make the return for the ac adapter, and the day i get it back, call in and complain about the drive and battery...will they be suspicious? The warranty expires on the 24th, so i'll get it back by wednesday, and call that night complaining about the drive and battery.

Or would it be better to complain about the battery when i send it in to the depot, and just "forget" to give them the password to log into windows or OSX?

82n is the xxx spot

i'll take any info i can get, since i left it til the last minute like a dope!

thanks for the help!

You're good.

Not complain, state the issues that we suggested. You'll get them replaced.

You battery was made February 14th 2008. So I assume you system was probably made 2 months later. You're good

Thanks for the info, i'm still a little unclear though. If i mention the battery when it's at the depot, won't they just test it and see that it DOES stay on? Same with the cd-rom. So i assume it's better to call afterwards and they will ship them out to me?

thanks again poorman, you're awesome!

Well, quite contrary to some of these fake problems, I have real problems. Do you think they'll take that as an excuse? I have an Inspiron 1525 laptop.

Quote:
To get a new AC Adapter for your laptop- Say that when you plug your adapter into the wall, it sparks a little bit. You can also tell them that the wires are frayed a little bit and then they must send you a new one because it is a safety hazard.

The connectors on both sides of the cord between the computer and the transformer have been completly exposed and are frayed a lot, and the part where the AC cable connects to the transformer sparks whenever I plug the other side into a wall.

My computer doesn't even report that I have a battery, and it only stays on for half a second before failing if unplugged. I do keep the battery in, but only because it is otherwise unconfortable to hold, but it is even with the battery because I have to keep it plugged in.

For all of the hard drive ones, diagnostics reports something to the point that it has bad sectors, and in addition, it makes a loud cracking noise about every five minutes, and all the time when I am playing games. With the noise also comes extreme slowness.

I think it's the motherboard that causes the battery to not work. It happened on my neighbor's.

To get the top of your laptop replaced (the top shell with the Dell logo on it)- Tell dhell it is very scratched up and they will replace it. As simple as that. That's why warranties are awesome because they allow you to nag and be answered.

The top of my computer has tons of scratches and two oil stains, in addition to the gigantic gash and dent in the dell logo

Surprisingly, the screen is in perfect condition.

The webcam fails and doesn't work until a reboot anytime the screen moves. In addition, it can only take still photos, no video, from an application. Recording to facebook, youtube, and all of that isn't possible becuase the webcam isn't even detected though, and the blue light goes on when I try to use them.

I bought the laptop which was labeled to have bluetooth. Guess what? It physically doesn't have bluetooth.

Five of 'em.

To get a new palm rest and trackpad- Tell Dhell that your left click button is very loose and so it clicks even when very little pressure is applied. They will replace your trackpad and left click and right click buttons. Fortunately the trackpad is part of the palm rest so the entire palm rest will be replaced.

Well, this is true for me. As for the keyboard, except for missing five keycaps, the keyboard, mouse, etc is separated from the underside by about half an inch becuase it fell off of a four foot podium.

I don't really feel like quoting this

My computer shuts down every five minutes and reports that the hard drive is going to 150C and the processors are 200C.

The worst part is, I can't use the warranty because it says they don't cover things that you do, only stuff that's their fault. By the way, they mention that they don't cover things that are "caused by an act of God." That's a direct quote. Maybe Dell doesn't care about the people who don't believe in god. That's just unfair. OR, people who don't believe in god don't get their warranty revoked because of rain, thunderstorms, etc.

well, my "fake" problem is that the battery really does hold a charge, just not for more than about 20 minutes, and considering it's the extended battery, that's not kosher, it's reported to be at the end of it's life, and the AC adapter doesn't stay in the port properly. The cd-rom was just a whim.

In the past, i've had to have my dead 160/7200 HDD, keyboard, hinges, touchpad and buttons replaced, so yea, i've had "real" problems as well.

To be the devil's advocate, if you buy a car, crash it, then try and get the work covered under warranty, wouldn't that be the same thing as your laptop falling from a podium, then trying to get work covered by the warranty.

just my $.02

the bottom line is, it's going to the depot to have the adapter/port looked at, i wanted to know if the battery would be covered, and if there was something i could say or do to make sure it is, since a less than year old "extended" life battery should not be at the end of it's life so quickly, IMHO

call in and just report the issues.

I'm not sure why you're havinging problems getting coverage.

Just tell them you ran the PSA and got error code 0146. That'll get you a harddrive.

Tell them that a couple of the keys fell off and you can't stick them back on.

Then while you're on the phone with them act like you're running the PSA(powered off you press FN + power) tell them nothing is happening except that the numlock-caplock, and scroll lock are flashing.

THis indicates that the motherboard has failed. They'll want you to do some other things. Do them, but stick to it that the 3 lock lights are flashing with nothing coming on the screen.

but don't they test it when they receive it at the depot? I would think if they are looking at a MOBO failure, they would test for themselves and see everything is fine...

just curious..

Yey Smile

They're not that bad when you know what to say.

Alot of people get into trouble be letting the "technician" have control.

It's like walking onto a car lot and putting complete trust in the salesman. You're going to get raped!

Another way to get your monitor replaced- If you have the Complete Care warranty then tell them you accidentally scratched your monitor screen and you get a new one. That simple. This is especially good for LCD Monitors that are several years old because over time the colors fade.

To get your Laptop Motherboard replaced- Tell them that your battery will not charge. Also tell them that without the battery the computer has no power even if it is plugged in. Plus, tell them you tried the AC Cable on another laptop and it worked. AC power issues can be related to the battery, AC cable, and Motherboard, and this rules out both the cable and battery being the issue.

To get your Desktop Motherboard replaced- Tell them that some of the USB ports on your computer do not work no matter what is plugged into them (including the mouse/keyboard). No error messages are needed for this one.

Get Desktop MotherBoard- You get a message saying "USB Device Not Recognized" as seen here. Also say that you reinstalled Windows along with all the drivers from dell.com but this did not help. Finally, say that the device getting the issue works on other computers and other USB ports on the same computer (So you're saying only one USB prot is having the problem as opposed to all of them), and that the device works in the problematic port for a few minutes but then gets the error and stops working until restarting.
