The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Dell is killing its four big balls XPS gaming machines (not the entire XPS line, like the standard notebooks, which are selling really well) to focus all of its juice on Alienware as its sole gaming brand. The timeline isn't overly specific, but the clock is ticking for Dell's XPS WoW notebook and their car-sized (and priced) 730 tower. We actually sorta figured this was coming.
While the cross-competition issue is obvious, our suspicions became more solid because of the bit buried in the announcement of Alienware's mondo 17-inch gaming notebook that Alienware was going to move into budget gaming PCs for more mainstream gamers. Why cannibalize themselves on both the upper and lower ends? Course, this just means the Alienware name is going to be tied even more closely to Dell, so whatever cachet left in the name is probably toast, like your wallet after buying one. |

Alienware looks nice if you are a 17 year old gamer (male of course) with overspending parents.
I'd never buy one of their overpriced plastic toys.
The XPS stuff looked a lot nicer, although the XPS 7xx machine are behemoths. The XPS 630 looked a lot nicer and uses more standard parts for future upgrades.
Still, because I can, I built my own system, roughly equivalent to an XPS720 (non HC) but for about 1/2 the price of the XPS420. No, it doesnt have a slick case, but all the electronics are top shelf. A cool case won't get you FPS.
I'll take the crate motor over the flashy paint job anyday |

Yes, if you built it yourself it's way better than buying any manufacturers computer because of the price to performance ratio. Beside, if you have any problems, you can always talk to the person who sold you the products that is if you bought it from the local shop. |
