For that difference in price, you can afford a water cooling system and much more.

I just wanted to point out that Dell doesn't really even offer anything truly high-end or cutting edge, and the high-end systems they do offer are overpriced and crappy. Try to argue with this, please

Welcome ring! All pc manufacturers systems are overpriced all of them, Look at the boutique vendors they use the same parts you do but charge about 20% premium over e-tailer price and The mobo dell uses and i quote the dell sales rep who i called. "The motherboard its self is 1000$ because it can support dual graphic cards from ati or nvidia" I asked him really whats the chipset? He answered "Intel very rare and expensive it has many features which make it worth the price" Bullshit i told him no mobo supports both techs at once and no mobo costs 1000$ i hung up and never prank phone called dell again(Not really i did it twice last week)

Why you using the 7950gx2? The 8800 and they support dx10.

DX10 is only going to be supported in Vista, there wont be a DX10 in XP.. so that point is moot until vista is released, anyway.

Dell offers (in theory) a turn-key situation. You should be able to plug it in, turn it on, and have a working machine.

The same theory can be applied to making a Replicar (turn a late-model mustang into a Shelby Cobra look-a-like). Sure you could buy the kit and donor car, and put the time, blood, sweat and tears into getting everything worked, machined, painted, put together, etc. Or, you could pay someone $25,000 (on top of the parts) and have someone do it for you. Sure you pay more for the end product, but you don't have to go throguh the assembly, the testing, the effort. You can just turn the key, and go.

your forgetting that there is also the cost for "Warrenty and Support"

You are also paying for the support contract from dell itself. THe cost of techs, ect.

They have to offset the cost of people calling in with "How do i click t he start button" somehow/

david, there is an intel chipset that [theoretically] can support crossfire and SLi, it is the i965 or the i975, I can't remember which. However, since it is not certified for SLi, nVidia will not garantee that it will work.

I have been saying this all along: you can build a quality system with nearly the same, or better, hardware than Dell uses, and you can do it for less.

Quality is a big thing. Just the other day, before I returned home for the Thnaksgiving break [I get a week off ] I examined one of my friends computers. He has an ASUS motherboard, with an i915 chipset. I have a dell motherboard, also with an i915 chipset. On his mobo, there is a large heatsink just to the left of the CPU socket. This covers the switches [I think they are MOSFETS, pretty sure actually] used in the power supply for the CPU. On my motherboard, therre is no heatsink. There are through-hole mountes where the switches should solder on, but instead of through hole MOSFETs, there are surface mount MOSFETS with their legs bent and shoved though the holes. *sigh* I quesss that dell wanted to save money so much that it skimped on MOSFETs on the CPU power supply.
