Dell promised tech support for my new dimension computer but when I called to ask about why my outlook express didn't work they said it was a "fee based" question and they would have to charge me.

In my opinion Dell lies about the quality of their tech support and I will tell every teacher who asks whether I would recommend Dell....NO....BUY a Macintosh instead.

The only worse people than DELL are GATEWAY. They proverbially suck also.

Your warranty covers hardware-based issues. Software isn't covered, without an additional fee.

Reason? Software is too volatile. It's too easy to screw it up.

You are going through this because of your own fault.

It was you who didn't read the Warranty Agreement...

Don't bitch if you don't know what you are bitching about. Cause this time, you are bitching about your own foolish actions Wink

teach: Ask your question in the consumer help section. Someone will help you there. Otherwise, they're right when tech support is only for hardware or operating system issues. No tutorials. Hire some local four-eyed kid to teach you the ropes.

teach,

it is like calling the car dealership that you got your car and asking them how you pump gas?

I am sorry about it. You could call Mircosoft.

Better yet, post the question here. Probably get a lot quicker answer, along with being more accurate.

well with tech support it is like almost a pissing contest. I have seen forums where people would type the longest answer. Why? First off, I would never trust anybody off the net.

i usually try newsgroups. SHHHHH them be a secret

Tell us, Grissom: What manual comes with a Dell computer that covers the produce Outlook Express? In all of my years in buying PCs, I've never received a manual with one that deals with Outlook Express.

You must've woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning...

Hey guys!!! This is impossible!!! How Dell will give us support on Software!!! I think you guys haven't read your contract yet. dude... Go and read your contract... Any contract that you purchase on Dell Systems Software is not included. Don't be such a user!!! jajaja... READ!!! I called several times on software issues, and I figure out something. If you really have something wrong with any software, just google it first, if this still doesn't work, backup all the files on your system. (I don't think you want to loose any of your important file). REINSTALL THE WHOLE SYSTEM!!! then if this still doesn't work, then you call Dell, and tell them what you have done. At the beggining I blame Dell on everything. because I didn't read the contract. but once you read it. you will figure it out. I got an XPS Gen 5, and this has never ever gave me a problem. but that depends on how you use it. if you are a beginner, please buy a cheaper PC so you can break it, then you pay for one that is more expensive than the first one, and you WON'T try to do STUPID things. or if you where STUPID.

Dell doesn't provide you software support because they want to screw you. Dell doesn't provide software support because they simply didn't make that soft. It is not of their business if you know how to use or not. And if you have a problem with it, you call the manufacturer, not the person who sold it to you...

Have you seen a 1800-DRIVE-FORD number Question

Of course you haven't, they don't teach you how to drive your car.

If you have defective GoodYear tire, who are you going to call Question Ford or GoodYear Question

Shocked

Not a good analogy, Paul. If the Ford had Goodyear tires on it as OEM equipment and something goes wrong, I'm calling Ford. Remember the Firestone problems a few years ago? Ford ended up taking care of the problem.

nope ot a good analogy.

Rule 1. Manufacturer warrranties ONLY cover hardware and in the case of an onsite warranty, labor to install said hardware.

Rule 2. Call the appropriate person for your problem. If you cant get your email. call your ISP. They are specifically trained for all the settings needed for connectivity to their systems. If you can't get quickbooks working , you call quickbooks. They are going to be more familiar with how to deal with the problem.

Rule 3. as grissom stated and it goes with anything you buy, before you touch it: RTFM

Rule 4: Before you play with it, and before you call bitching about it: Read your warranty. know its terms and conditions. know whats expected of you (basic troubleshooting overthe phone), know whats expected of Dell (if you refuse to troubleshoot, they can refuse to send a tech or a part)

the above rules apply to anything and everything you buy.

Nope, I don't remember the problems Firestone had a few years ago.

Anyhow, you shouldn't call Ford because of defective tires. Go ahead and do it. They'll tell you must call the tire Company.
