Ordered a XPS 1730 over the phone (i work offshore, didnt have internet access)and i included 4gigs of ram. Took for granted that i would get it with a 64bits vista due to the amount of ram, call me naive but to me its common knowledge that 32bit windows versions cant handle more than 3,18 gigs of ram.
When the confirmation was emailed to me it said that ive choosen a 32bit vista. I emailed the salesperson back and said that i wanted the 64bit version,no answer.
When i recived the notebook (with 32bit installed)i emailed customer care,no answer. So i called, only to first talk cusomer care and then a technician that ensured me that Vista is using ALL memory anyway,it just doesent look that way wich is total BS.
Here is what MS is saying about 4 gig memory or more: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605
This shows that its mathematical imbossible to access 4gig (Vista can address it though): http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000811.html
Im standing here with one of my life biggest investments (its a PRICY notebook) and i feel cheated,is there anyway i can convince DELL to send me a 64bits version?
Sorry for any misspellings ,english is not my first language... |

| Are you within the return period? You could take a "I want vista 64 like I originally ordered or I'm returning it" stance. That should get something done as they typically have something in place to save the sale. |

| I recived it the 5th this month,so maybe your right. Still pissed off getting lied to over the phone and treated like an idiot, the techguy was comparing the RAM to pizzabread and Vista as peanutbutter then he explained that vista spread the peanutbutter evenly all over the pizza using the hole bread, weird metafor if you ask me..... |

| The XPS line is generally sold as a gaming machine. Gamers dont want 64bit vista, because of driver and game incompatibilities. If you want a 64-bit OS, you might have to return it and go with a Workstation... or if you can find out the part number for the Vista 64-bit disc, request that they have it sent to you directly. |

| Yeah, I'm pretty sure they don't even sell 64 bit vista in consumer anyway. |

I´ve been gaming on the XP 64bit since MS released the retail version,ok not without problem but they were most driverelated, most Vista drivers are getting released on both 32 and 64bits plattforms so i hope that is a thing in the past.
diashto: what do you mean with "if you can find out the part number for the Vista 64-bit disc, request that they have it sent to you directly."? dont really understand.... part number |

| Every item they send out, be it a motherboard, cpu, cable, or CD, has a part number. If youhad the part number, you could call them up and say "I would like part number XXXXX shipped to me please" and then you wouldnt have to go through the rigamarole of trying to explain to someone what you wanted. |

*sigh*
Motherboard manufacturers and Windows architecture are both to blame. Because of the way a 32 bit operating system works, and depending on how much hardware and peripherals you have installed, some memory space is allotted for those devices. See if your motherboard supports memory remapping.
On the topic of 64-bit - sure it can handle from 8-128GB of RAM, but it's unstable as hell. XP 64bit is the same. Also you need a 64bit processor... |
