Anyone else have this error?
I've just had to reformat my pc, thanks to dell and thier stupid CDs
so yeah, i reinstall xp, get my sound drivers working, but everything else is still too damn slow, jerky etc. so i go to the dell dimension resourceCD to install my drivers n shizzle, and low and behold, it doesnt recognise my pc as a dell pc. Although, i did have to get a new motherboard, since dell fried mine, just after the warrenty... how convinient.
Now i am trapped with a pc , moving about as fast as thier customer support responses.
Is there any way that i can either:
a) somehow "override" that error message
b) get the drivers some other way
c) show some solution which prevents me from bringing a sledgehammer down on this pc.

Thanks for stating you had a motherboard replaced. Was that something you did on your own or did a dell tech do that for you? If you did it, you should have a dell bios cd that came with the board. On that cd is an option to change your service tag in the bios, which is not set, but needs to be for the dell disk to recognize as a computer. To do this, start your computer up, press F12 at the dell logo screen and insert your dell bios disk. select the option to boot from CD. Select the option to change service tag. It will ask you if you are sure you want to overwrite, which you do. When it gets to the point to insert service tag, type your 7 digit alpha numeric service tag. You will need to type it twice. Follow through the prompts to get it done.
otherwise, you can just go to support.dell.com and download the drivers you need, if you have another computer available.

The motherboard wasn't supplied by dell, so i did not get a dell bios disk with it. The motherboard is one of the "intel-Intel" Series from ASRock. The only drivers it had on there, was for my sound, and internet, which both work. Thanks anyway though, and i will check out support.dell.com for more info.

P.S it was me who did it.
P.P.S on the system screen (CP >> System) where it usually has the dell logo, it doesnt have now.

If its not a Dell Intel board then its not going to be reconized as a dell. Did you have any trouble it asking you to activate xp? Ive never heard of dell sending a CD with a motherboard replacement. I got a replacement motherboard from Gateway and they didn't send a CD. Has different serial nukmber for board than my other one did. But system serial number is same.

The driver cd checks with the bios to verify what is installed. As it is not seeing a Dell bios, it does not recognize the cd, so downloading drivers from the dell site or the manufacturer's site is the only option.
The reason dell sends the cd is so you can insert your service tag, which is the only thing dell goes by, into your bios, so the dell website will recognize the system and so on. They also have bios updates and a couple of other features on that disk. nothing big though. everything is done in a dos environment.

Still if he changed the motherboard its no longer a dell. So noone of the drivers from dell will work unless the video or sound may possible be the same model but i dout it.

Exactly, he will need to use the driver cd from the mobo, and forget he even has the dell cds. At any rate, its always best to nab the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website as what came with the mobo is probably outdated anyway. Unless of course, the mobo has integrated ethernet that winxp didnt pick up on and then he will need to use the driver cd. In that case, I wouldn't worry about updating right away. I would focus on getting the machine up and running first; THEN and only then do the updates.
